The St. Louis Cardinals, at the request of Darryl Kile's wife Flynn, are compiling a memory book with letters and notes for his three children. Fans who want to send a
note to the Kile family may do so at DK 57 Memory Book, 250 Stadium Plaza, St. Louis, MO. 63102

That's a really great thing to do. They will all be able to look back in 15-20 years and really admire what kind of guy DK was.

I found myself watching Kile's memorial service -- Fox Sports Southwest (which carries Astros games) carried it. It was very understated, very very solemn, and now I'm glad I woke up in time to see it (I'm not really a slacker -- sleeping late is one of the nice things about not having to go to work until 3 p.m. -- at least until Fall).

On top of the remarks from his teammates past and present, there was one thing that tugged on me, one of those little ordinary things they do all the time at ballparks, that in this context became one more subtle reminder of a life halted abruptly and prematurely.

It was this, displayed on a PA board over one of the bullpens, where it would normally be displayed:

RHP DARRYL KILE
W-L 5-4 3.72 ERA

as though he were starting the game that day.

(statistics as of June 19, 2002)
