Happy days, they be here...

per WSBTV.com...

quote:
Four-term Republican Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia was bounced out of Congress by Rep. John Linder on Tuesday after the two veteran conservatives were thrown together for a primary under Democrat-led redistricting. With 65 percent of precincts reporting, Linder had 38,328 votes, or 70 percent; Barr had 16,144 votes, or 30 percent. Barr, the fiery maverick who led the House impeachment of President Clinton, becomes the seventh House incumbent ousted in a primary this year. Linder is expected to win a sixth term this fall.

Another Georgia firebrand, Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney, was locked in a primary fight against Denise Majette, a Yale-educated former judge. With 120 of 174 precincts reporting, Majette had 39,926 votes, or 61 percent, compared to 25,283 votes, or 39 percent for McKinney. It was unclear which precincts were reporting, which could skew the early returns. McKinney is strongest in south DeKalb County, and McKinney workers said those numbers often come in last. "If we turn the numbers out in south DeKalb, we win. If we don't, we lose," said state Rep. Tyrone Brooks, a McKinney ally who said Majette "couldn't penetrate our base."

On a busy primary day, the races involving Barr and McKinney grabbed the most attention. Like Linder, the winner of the McKinney-Majette battle is expected to be elected this fall. Barr and Linder had offered voters in the 7th District a stark choice in style, if not substance. Both men back tax cuts, gun rights and a ban on abortion, but their approaches could not be more different. The blunt-spoken Barr, 53, was first elected in the GOP landslide of 1994. He was the first to call for Clinton's impeachment over the Monica Lewinsky affair and polished his maverick imaged by questioning the Bush administration's expanded law enforcement efforts to combat terrorism. Linder, 59, a former fund-raiser for Newt Gingrich, is a quiet policy wonk who told voters the most effective lawmakers don't show up on talk shows every night--a clear dig at his opponent.

The real fireworks were in the 4th District, where McKinney surprised even fellow Democrats by suggesting the Bush administration had ignored warnings about Sept. 11 and the president's big business allies have benefited from the war on terrorism. McKinney, a single mother and former college professor first elected to Congress in 1992, also said she would have accepted a Saudi prince's $10 million check for Sept. 11 victims. The check was rejected by New York officials after the prince suggested U.S. policies toward the Mideast were partly to blame for the attacks. Middle East politics played an unlikely role in the race. McKinney drew campaign financing from out of state, including money from pro-Arab groups, while Jewish groups helped fund Majette's campaign. The 47-year-old McKinney and the 46-year-old Majette are both black and the incumbent had expected to draw most of the black vote. But Majette attracted support from Republicans, who are allowed to vote in the Democratic race under the state's open primary. Congressmen already ousted this year include Democrats Hilliard, Gary Condit of California, Frank Mascara of Pennsylvania and Tom Sawyer of Ohio. Rep. Lynn Rivers, D-Mich., Mascara and GOP Rep. Brian Kerns of Indiana all lost to fellow incumbents in primary races forced by redistricting.

A sad day for the Middle East as their so-called "strategic placement" has been ousted.

and you KNEW that McKinney would be a sore loser and blame the fact that she lost on a conspiracy...everybody is just out to get her...

quote:

Political unknown Denise Majette scored a remarkable upset Tuesday of five-term Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney.

Majette, a former state judge, easily defeated McKinney in the Democratic primary in the 4th District, a seat she held for a decade. With 161 of 174 precincts reporting, Majette had 62,750 votes, or 59 percent, compared to 43,673 votes, or 41 percent for McKinney.

Majette was counting on large Republican crossover voting to unseat McKinney, an outspoken liberal who made headlines for criticizing President Bush and other Republicans after Sept. 11. But Majette made inroads even in McKinney's traditional base of voters in south DeKalb.

"It looks like the Republicans wanted to beat me more than the Democrats wanted to keep me," McKinney said, attributing her loss to "massive Republican crossover. People just don't know when they have a good going."

McKinney said she lost popularity because she wasn't afraid to challenge powerful men like Bush.

"Sometimes you have to stand up ... and speak truth to the most powerful," she told supporters.

Majette, 47, was a political unknown when she announced her campaign to unseat McKinney early this year, but quickly drew the support of many who were tired of McKinney, including Democratic Sen. Zell Miller.

Political watchers said Tuesday's race reflected more on McKinney than Majette.

McKinney scolded former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani for returning a donation from a Saudi prince after the prince suggested America was partly responsible for the attacks. McKinney also accused President Bush of purposely ignoring warnings of the attacks so his friends could profit from a war on terrorism.

"It appears she blew it," said University of Georgia political scientist Charles Bullock. "She misjudged her constituency. She didn't think they would punish her for saying those things, but they did."

The district is heavily Democratic, so Majette is likely to win in November.

In the 4th District's Republican primary, it appeared none of three candidates would escape without a runoff. Cynthia van Auken led with 39 percent of the vote, followed by Catherine Davis (34 percent) and Barbara Pereira (27 percent). Turnout in the GOP race was light, with about 5,000 votes cast. That light turnout could indicate a high number of Republicans chose a Democratic ballot to vote against McKinney.

The 4th District includes most of suburban DeKalb County and a small slice of Gwinnett County. About half the voters in the district are black.

The race was heated from the start. McKinney accused Majette of opposing affirmative action and "selling out" to Republicans. Then, McKinney's supporters created an automated phone message telling DeKalb County voters that it was "illegal to cross over political lines and vote for a democrat if you are a registered republican ." Camp McKinney denies those accusations. Both are black women and liberals, but Majette is considered more moderate than McKinney.

McKinney, 47, is a former college professor first elected to Congress 10 years ago. Before that, she served in the state House with her father, who faces a runoff after his own primary Tuesday night.

Longtime state Rep. Billy McKinney has represented part of Atlanta for years and is credited for starting his daughter's political career. With 18 of 21 precincts reporting, Billy McKinney had 47 percent of the vote, and he needed more than 50 percent to avoid a runoff.

Actually, she does have a very valid point that many republicans did cross over and vote in the Dem primary. That is undeniable.

She is however a complete idiot and the type of annoying, whiny ***** that will throw a fit, claiming conspiracy, when booted from the grocery store express line for having 40 items over the limit of 8.

Time for a little separated at birth...

One of McKinney's biggest campaign supporters, Rep. Tyrone Brooks, who almost single-handedly removed "down that old, racist, divine symbol, the Georgia Confederate flag."

Majette really targeted the Jewish community to get more votes in DeKalb county. Apparently, Billy McKinney, Cynthia's father and "partner in crime," didn't like that.

Per an interview on WXIA in Atlanta...

quote:
After voting in Stone Mountain on Tuesday, neither McKinney nor her father Georgia Rep. Billy McKinney had anything to say about the elder McKinney's remarks Monday night regarding the Jewish community's support of Majette.

The comments followed 11Alive News asking Billy McKinney about his daughter using an old endorsement from former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young.

"That ain't nothing. That's nothing. Jews ain't nobody special," he said. "Jews have bought everybody. Jews... J-E-W-S."

Hmmm, looks like American government becomes more and more moderate as the most outstanding conservative(Barr) and the equally portruding liberal(McKinney) see their political careers flash and splatter before their eyes.

I guess Barr isn't gooder after all
