Myrtle Beach is the cesspool of South Carolina. I'd say it was as bad as Spartanburg, but it does at least have the ocean.
I grew up in Bluffton, right near Hilton Head. Hilton Head is definitely too country club-ish, and the beaches suck. If you can get in touch with a local though, see if they'll take you out to the sandbar at low tide, now that's fun.
My recommendation as a person from the Coastal Empire: Charleston. There are several different types of beaches there, and there are many different types of places to go out at night. Charleston has great nightlife and it's not so low class and filled with high school kids and motorbike gangs like Myrtle.
Other than that, I'd say go to Savannah or Wilmington.

Spartanburg is a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Dang... too late... I already do
Seriously though - Myrtle Beach is better than Charleston. Come on - have you taken in the air around Charleston? It STINKS! That's because of all those paper plants along the river.. phew... they have an ungodly odor.
The only thing I don't like about Myrtle is the water quality. The ocean isn't too great (many warnings about bacteria etc.) - and the actual tap water is just putrid too. The true good place to go for sparkling ocean water is the Mexico Beach area of Florida on the Gulf. Also, I can't think of the name of it... but some island off of Panama City Beach... seashell island or something close to that... nice crystal clear water. You can see straight to the bottom.

Gotta go with BuddyLee on this one...I have family ties to Charleston and spent most summers there as a kid...there is so much history in Charleston (Rainbow Row & The Battery are awesome!) and the food there is awesome! My great uncle is part owner of one of the horse drawn carriage companies there and every time I visit I make sure I get hooked up with a tour of the city...I also spent time in Myrtle Beach as a kid (Parents had a condo in Garden City) but I still have the fondest memories of Charleston.

Just because the water is clear doesn't mean it's cleaner or more pure. All ocean water is clear. The difference is the type of bottom. The east coast for the most part has a very alive bottom, and so it's dark, and so the water looks dark. The gulf coast has a very white bottom, and so the water looks clear.
If you go to Wrightsville beach in NC, you would be shocked because they have a unique beach for the east coast, the sand is very white and so the water is very clear. However, in contrast to the gulf, the beach gets very deep very fast and so you can't see very far into the water.

Except I would wear them to a Buffett concert instead. And with the Jimmy Buffett reference, it's time for a wine cooler!
