Point taken, LRT, but Memorial Day is also a big day on remembering the importance of Veterans -- 9/11 isn't.

Oh...I know that, SSJT, but in a small way we do have days of rememberance for death...it's just different that Memorial Day remembers the Veterans of War...while the vast majority of the people killed on 9/11 were civilians.

You are quite correct on the death part, rememberance and stuff.

But, ah, still, the situations. A unsuccessful war against North Korea, and three planes causing the deaths of thousands. You're probably more correct on the comparisons if 9/11 were to become a holiday, but let me remind you what happend to Memorial Day...

Memorial Day car sales.
Memorial Day One-day-only sales events at Macy's.
Memorial Day "supplies"
The day the local pools open.

THat's what people think of when they think of Memorial Day.

And I just don't think 9/11 would escape that result. Maybe not the exact same thing, but eventually, it'd just be another day off from work and school, ya know?

How about a "public service holiday" to honor all the firefighters who lost their lives, voluntarily.

That's actually a pretty damn good idea. Firefighters don't get enough respect as it is.

REMEMBER THIS!!!!!!

December 7 is not a federal holiday and never has been, 9-11 will never be a federal holiday, as it shouldn't.

It shouldn't be a holiday, just a date that will always be remembered. Others, like July 20, 1969 when we first landed on the moon, or November 22, 1963 when JFK was assassinated. It's the kind of event that you will alway remember where you were when you first heard about it.

Obviously, those two aren't as eventful as Dec. 7 or Sept. 11, but hopefully somebody picked up the point.

I hadn't thought about 12/7 as a similar date in history.

Oh...and SSJT (I believe that's who said it), I don't think that having that day as solely a day to remember firefighters would be a good idea. While they do deserve a day of honor, it wasn't just firefighters that died that day, and it would be (in my view) an insult to all the other public service people (policemen, NY Port Authority workers, the R.C priest that died, the military that died in the Pentagon attack) that died that day...along with all the regular civilians.
