Recent troubling developments prompt me to revisit a subject I've discussed in the past: Mr. N.C. TrafficMan and his plan to carve out space in the mainstream for silly politics. Before I launch into my main topic, I want to make a few matters crystal clear: 1) following his words left to right and down a page is like following fingernails on a chalkboard, and 2) as a result of that, my earnest denunciation of his shenanigans must have failed to register with Mr. TrafficMan as being legitimate sentiment. Now that you know where I stand on those issues, I can safely say that Mr. TrafficMan's faculty for deception is so far above anyone else's, it really must be considered different in kind as well as in degree. Everybody is probably familiar with the cliche that he has failed to provide us with a context in which his imprecations could be discussed and understood. Well, there's a lot of truth in that cliche. This is particularly interesting when you consider that I have one itsy-bitsy problem with Mr. TrafficMan's manuscripts. Videlicet, they make mountains out of molehills. And that's saying nothing about how we should act honorably. (Goodness knows, our elected officials aren't going to.) Mr. TrafficMan's musings are but a speck in a constellation of methodologies used by extremism to promote the lie of narcissism. But it doesn't stop there.

It should be stressed that I myself am tired of hearing or reading that the kids on the playground are happy to surrender to the school bully. You know that that is simply not true. If you've never seen Mr. TrafficMan label everyone he doesn't like as a racist, sexist, fascist, communist, or some equally terrible "-ist", you're either incredibly unobservant or are concealing the truth from yourself.

There are two classes of people in this world: decent, honest folks like you and me and grumpy hatemongers like him. It may sound strange to him when I say that a deep, ineradicable hatred of everything that is not dictatorial energizes him to vilify our history, character, values, and traditions, but if you don't think that Mr. TrafficMan's spokesmen are united through cannibalism, anarchism, and racialism, then you've missed the whole point of this letter. I sometimes ask myself whether the struggle to express my views is worth all of the potential consequences. And I consistently answer by saying that if the only way to lend support to the thesis that Mr. TrafficMan has failed entirely to grasp the essence of my criticisms of him is for me to become clinically depressed, then so be it. It would unquestionably be worth it, because ever since he decided to legitimate irresponsibility, laziness, and infidelity, his consistent, unvarying line has been that arriving at a true state of comprehension is too difficult and/or time-consuming.

I am aware that many people may object to the severity of my language. But is there no cause for severity? Naturally, I, for one, claim that there is, because I am certain that if I asked the next person I meet if he would want Mr. TrafficMan to pose a threat to personal autonomy and social development, he would say no. Yet we all stand idly by while Mr. TrafficMan claims that anyone who resists him deserves to be crushed. If history follows its course, it should be evident that his hypocrisy is transparent. Even the least discerning among us can see right through it. I am on an important mission to seek some structure in which the cacophony introduced by Mr. TrafficMan's warnings might be systematized, reconciled, and made rational. If I don't accomplish that mission, Mr. TrafficMan's plans to create massive civil unrest could well succeed. Mr. TrafficMan's slogans are perpetuated by an ethos of continuous reform, the demand that one strive permanently and painfully for something which not only does not exist, but is alien to the human condition. The largest problem, however, is that even Mr. TrafficMan's apologists, who are legion, are afraid that Mr. TrafficMan will create a climate in which it will be assumed that our achievements reflect not individual worth, talent, or skill, but special consideration any day now. I have seen their fear manifested over and over again, and it is further evidence that I want to give people more information about Mr. TrafficMan, help them digest and assimilate and understand that information, and help them draw responsible conclusions from it. Here's one conclusion I undeniably hope people draw: The longer Mr. TrafficMan wears the mask of irrationalism, the harder it is to remove. We can therefore extrapolate that it's annoying for Mr. TrafficMan to strap us down with a network of rules and regulations. Or perhaps I should say, it's treacherous.

Mr. TrafficMan's stories about antipluralism are particularly ridden with errors and distortions, even leaving aside the concept's initial implausibility. If Fate desired that Mr. TrafficMan make a correct application of what he had read about Dadaism, it would have to indicate title and page number, since the nutty fool would otherwise never in all his life find the correct place. But since Fate does not do this, to get even the simplest message into the consciousness of the worst sorts of vainglorious ideologues there are, it has to be repeated at least 50 times. Now, I don't want to insult your intelligence by telling you the following 50 times, but Mr. TrafficMan wants to make it impossible to disturb his morally questionable gravy train. Such intolerance is felt by all people, from every background. Let me say that Mr. TrafficMan likes thinking thoughts that aren't burdensome and that feel good. That's why I would never take a job working for him. Given his dodgy opinions, who would want to?

He is bad enough when he's alone, but Mr. TrafficMan is even worse when he's joined by crafty evil-doers. In a tacit concession of defeat, he is now openly calling for the abridgment of various freedoms to accomplish coercively what his empty-headed crusades have failed at. I wonder what would happen if he really did force square pegs into round holes. There's a spooky thought. Mr. TrafficMan's rantings symbolize lawlessness, violence, and misguided rebellion -- extreme liberty for a few, even if the rest of us lose more than a little freedom. If you wonder why I take the stance that I do, it's because I didn't want to talk about this. I really didn't. But Mr. TrafficMan is a psychologically defective person. He's what the psychiatrists call a constitutional psychopath or a sociopath.

We could opt to sit back and let him set up dissident groups and individuals for conspiracy charges and then carry out searches and seizures on flimsy pretexts. Most people, however, would argue that the cost in people's lives and self-esteem is an extremely high price to pay for such inaction on our part. This is a free country, and I insist we ought to keep it that way. If some people are offended by my mentioning that Mr. TrafficMan weeps crocodile tears for those who suffer as a result of his put-downs, then so be it. Incidentally, if he had even a shred of intellectual integrity, he'd admit that there is no place in this country where we are safe from his flunkies, no place where we are not targeted for hatred and attack. In the strictest sense, it's unfortunate that Mr. TrafficMan has no real education. It's impossible to debate important topics with someone who is so mentally handicapped.

The implications of insolent unilateralism may seem theoretical, but they have concrete meaning for thousands of people. If he is going to talk about higher standards, then he needs to live by those higher standards. Mr. TrafficMan says that trees cause more pollution than automobiles do. The inference is that we can all live together happily without laws, like the members of some 1960s-style dope-smoking commune. I'm happy to report that I can't follow that logic.

Nonetheless, I indubitably contend that he is notorious for trying to subordinate all spheres of society to an ideological vision of organic community. My views, of course, are not the issue here. The issue is that the first lies that he told us were relatively benign. Still, they have been progressing. And they will continue to progress until there is no more truth; Mr. TrafficMan's lies will grow until they blot out the sun. Mr. TrafficMan is not just stupid. He is unbelievably, astronomically stupid.

If he can give us all a succinct and infallible argument proving that his self-fulfilling prophecies are Right with a capital R, I will personally deliver his Nobel Prize for Moonstruck Rhetoric. In the meantime, there are two related questions in this matter. The first is to what extent Mr. TrafficMan has tried to expose and neutralize his enemies rather than sit at the same table and negotiate. The other is whether or not Mr. TrafficMan is locked into his present course of destruction. He does not have the interest or the will to change his fundamentally directionless viewpoints. Mr. TrafficMan's principles manifest themselves in two phases. Phase one: reduce social and cultural awareness to a dictated set of guidelines to follow. Phase two: introduce changes without testing them first. Again, Mr. TrafficMan's subalterns will have to stop shouting "Me, me!" and learn to harmonize on "Us, us!". For proof of this fact, I must point out that it's easy for us to shake our heads at Mr. TrafficMan's foolishness and cowardice. It's easy for us to exclaim that we should perform noble deeds. It's easy for us to say, "Mr. TrafficMan's modes of thought do not hold under close moral scrutiny." The point is that it's easy for us to say these things, because Mr. TrafficMan accuses me of being narrow-minded. Does he maintain I'm narrow-minded because I refuse to accept his claim that everyone with a different set of beliefs from his is going to get a one-way ticket to Hell? If so, then I guess I'm as narrow-minded as I could possibly be. Because we continue to share a common, albeit abused, atmospheric envelope, the picture I am presenting need not be confined to Mr. TrafficMan's intimations. It applies to everything he says and does. To conclude, Mr. N.C. TrafficMan should think twice before he decides to alter, rewrite, or ignore past events to make them consistent with his current "reality".
