It may end up being a Federal Holiday, but think if he put that out there now. How are we going to pay for it would be the cry from "some people".

MLK day, Columbus day and president's day should not be federal holidays.

Honoring one person with a holiday is not necessary. MLK was a salute to all the Civil rights folks IMHO. He was the person they chose because he was killed and represented the entire movement. Why Columbus day is a holiday is beyond me. I am not sure if we want to "celebrate" the death and destruction of 9/11.

I typed that while I was doing a number of different things. I change a couple of things in there. Christmas is a whole different ball of wax.

I agree it's different. It's so encultured into American society that it's far more than a celebration of Christ. Plus I would reckon that about 90% of American's celebrate Christmas in some way. I am fairly confident that the number of people that give a damn about MLK day, Columbus day, or Presidents day is much smaller.

There's no need for a holiday about destruction. The only thing I want on 9/11 is a normal day without any speeches from politicians.

MLK day is a good holiday, although no one thinks about the true significance anymore.

Agreed, SSJT... do you all think that people will turn this into a sort of a religious holiday, due to the emphasis on reflection and prayer?

September 11th should not be made a national holiday. It should be remember every year, but if it was made a holiday, many would just regard it as a day off from work/school.

If we made it a federal holiday, the terrorists will have won.

Also, Christ isn't really a "person" if you get what I'm saying. He's more than that.

I have to agree with LK here, September 11th should be a holiday. It is a day to remember everyone that lost their lives and a day to celebrate that this country is stronger now because of it. It is both a sort of celebration and a day or mourning and rememberance.

It's not going to take a holiday for me to remember that's for sure. Every time I look at a clock reading 9:11 I am reminded...

Holidays should be celebration for great things, like Veterans Day. If September 11 became a holiday, I would just head to the lake like I usually do when I have free time, and we shouldnt remember 9-11 by water skiing.

People's Champ, as long as a President like Bush is in, he will end up endorsing some kind of a national day of prayer, and completely disregard every other belief or lack thereof in the USA.

If 9/11 is a holiday, sooner or later we will have backyard bbq's and kids waiting for that day off from school aka the day a ton of people died in NYC and DC.

I'm sure we all want that.

Well...I haven't yet formed an opinion about whether 9/11 should be a federal holiday or not...but I did want to point out that Memorial Day is all about tragic losses...so there would be some sort of precedent for all this.
