Raleigh Police Officer Killed In Wreck On Beltline
Section Of I-440 Near Rock Quarry Road Closed

POSTED: 10:54 a.m. EDT September 10, 2002
UPDATED: 12:45 p.m. EDT September 10, 2002

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A Raleigh police officer on a motorcycle was killed Tuesday morning after a single-vehicle wreck along the inner loop of the Raleigh beltline.

Capt. M.R. Teem, of the Raleigh Police Department, said the wreck happened at 10:12 a.m. between Rock Quarry and Hammond roads.

Police said the traffic enforcement officer was going after a speeding motorist when the officer lost control of the motorcycle and struck the guardrail separating the inner and outer loops.

The officer has not been identified, pending notification of the next of kin.

The inner beltline is closed between South Saunders Street and Rock Quarry Road. Traffic is being diverted at the Rock Quarry Road exit. The outer beltline is open.

Police are still investigating the crash. They are looking for a burgundy car, possibly a Toyota, that was believed to be the speeding vehicle. Police say the driver of the vehicle is considered a witness to the accident, not a suspect.

I heard this as it happened over one of my police scanners this morning...you never want to hear the words "Signal 25" (Officer Down, Emergency) come over the radio...I did this morning...my thoughts and prayers are with this officers family and friends during this tough time...

Having gotten a taste of road rash from an old Triumph years ago, I know how dangerous bikes can be. Thoughts and prayers to the officers family. What a tragedy.

UPDATED: 2:54 p.m. EDT September 10, 2002

RALEIGH -- A Raleigh police officer driving a motorcycle was killed in an accident Tuesday morning on I-440 near Rock Quarry Road and South Saunders Street.

According to the Raleigh Police Department, Master Officer Charles Radford Paul III, 30, was chasing a burgundy vehicle, possibly a Toyota, around 10:15 a.m. for a speeding violation when he lost control of his vehicle and wrecked into a guardrail between the inner and outer beltline.

Authorities have shut down the section of the beltline and are looking for any possible witnesses.

Paul joined the Raleigh Police Department July 17, 1995 and had been working in the Traffic Enforcement Unit for the past 21 months. He is survived by his wife, Tiffany, and 1-year-old daughter Charil.

Paul was a graduate of East Wake High School and East Carolina University.

Raleigh Police Chief Jane Perlov has scheduled a press conference at 4 p.m. Tuesday to provide more details about the accident.

That is very sad <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" /> My thoughts and prayers go to the family and the whole dept. I can't even begin to say what this is like. You never want to hear 10-24 either that means officer down and what is even worse when you call and your Deputy never answers. Rest in Peace Officer in Blue. Take care of my Officer in Green.

Sarah
