and speaking of veteran rock stars, Joe Walsh and Slash both lived here for a very brief time....though not at the same time and not with each other. Joe Walsh used to show up to the old AM Loop and randomly visit with some on-air personalities he was friends with. Slash is/was married to a Chicago girl.

I thought she was a Minnesotan? Regardless, she's amazing. Such a soulful voice.
She was a Chicagoan at one time. Her old band Bumpus used to play around the city all the time. I was fortunate enough to catch them a couple times before she went on to bigger and better.

I just tried to see if I could varify any of this and she now lists her headquarters as New York.

Thanks TxTiger, so many music innovations took place in Memphis it's hard to name them all or the groups that contributed. Blues, rockabilly, rock and roll, soul (shared with Motown) and now rap have their roots in the big muddy river town. Alternative and Punk somehow passed our city by.

BTW, in Paste magazine a couple months ago, there was a great article about Stax.

I just searched, I can't find it.

my hometown of anderson, in is known is where Sandi Patti lives. and a member of the ataris is also from there. oh and that chick who had a single about 5-6 years ago called "supergirl" went to the same high school I did. other than that, I doubt A-Town had any other musical talent.

now birmingham, al... well i have to look up all the bands from here, there are a lot. only one coming to my head right now is Adelayda, never made it big. and then you have all those American Idol people...

I'm not a big fan of Nashville music, but within the 300 miles between Nashville and Memphis there's more music history than any region anywhere on Earth. I'd say that those two cities rank #1 and #2 in music heritage in the US.

Well, I'm in Columbus Ohio, and well, not a whole lot of "big" names come out of here.

Eric Clapton's wife is from here......does that count for anything?

Some of you might have heard of Big Back Forty, the guitarist/frontman from that band is actually from my REAL hometown area, and the band started in Columbus.

others....

Howlin' Maggie

ekoostik Hookah

Saving Jane

Dwight Yoakam

It's not only country/folk that comes out of Nashville. Look to "Kings of Leon" and "The Features", Jack White, Ben Folds and Third Day often operate and are attributed to Nashville.

RE: Your Cities' Musical Heritage
I'll agree with that list if you include "music scenes" but for "music history" I'd say Nashville, Memphis, New York, New Orleans are the top.

I feel bad leaving out St. Louis and Chicago though.

I didn't realize that Third Day operated from Nashville. For some reason I thought that they were based in Atlanta. Third Day's message is much more important than anything else mentioned in this thread.
