Rutgers shows no class
Quote:Obscene fans at Rutgers draw a penalty flag
Tuesday, September 11, 2007

The play came late in the game, when Rutgers expanded its lead over Navy to a comfortable level after a tight three quarters.

Navy's Reggie Campbell took the kickoff and ran full speed ahead up the middle with all the force his 168-pound body could generate. Campbell, almost always the smallest and fastest man on the field, hit a wall of XXXL-sized scarlet jerseys and was slammed to the ground at the bottom of the pile. He got up slowly, limping off. This gutsy kid, a slotback who already spent three quarters being chased and tackled by gangs of defensive linemen and linebackers, all weighing at least 100 pounds more than him, was then given a dose of Rutgers' student section class.

''You got f---ed up. You got f---ed up. You got f--ed-up," they chanted.

Reggie Campbell is a senior. After graduation in June he has a five-year commitment to the American military, which, like it or not, is at war.

"This is how you treat people who may die for this country?" said Bill Squires, an Annapolis graduate (Class of'75) who was on the sidelines for the Friday night game in Piscataway and was shocked by the obscene chants directed at the Navy players and fans throughout the game. "It was the most classless thing I've seen."

Navy was booed and peppered with "You suck!" chants when they stepped on the field for both halves. Toward the end of the second half, Rutgers students in the new bleacher section began to serenade the adjacent section of Navy fans and uniformed Midshipmen.

''F--- you, Navy. F---you, Navy. F--- you, Navy."

If they had I probably would have heard about it outside of the Spin Room. The only place I heard the above.

I'm just trying to be argumentative! 04-cheers

Seriously though... people need to lighten up. Everything has to be so over the top now a days. Stupid knee jerk reations to thigns that are hardly a big deal.

Like allowing 1-AA teams to all of a sudden be able to be voted in with the Top 25 temas in the nation. Its a JOKE

it's only because there's so much media. that's the reason you see people acting rashly to things that don't seem like a big deal. There's just so much more media than ever.

Im a big Navy fan, so I might be biased but I think this is disrespectful. I think the service academies should be treated with more respect than other college football teams, these kids are going to be serving their country.

OTOH I think it is easy to see how [drunk] college student could lose sight of that and treat it like any other game against any other school. Not excusing it, just saying if they stopped and thought things over they may have treated them better.

RE: Rutgers shows no class
Is it only classless because these guys are serving? I'd say fans overall are out of hand. There's no need to be that disrespectful towards any sports players. But you see behavior every day that people cannot get away with in most public venues happening at sporting events. It's all rather silly.

The fact that he's serving the country already get him respect. While he's on the football field he's not serving the country, he's playing a game. Should the fans applaud him as he gets his butt kicked? What about a guy who's getting a degree in social work? Should he also get extra respect?
