RE: Appalachian State
they changed the rule after their smack down of #5 Michigan because some reporters wanted to include them in their poll. so now any team (regardless of division) can get votes

Does that mean that (in theory) at D III team can get votes?

in theory yes, in practicality i would say within 99.9% probability not happening though.

RE: Appalachian State
Here's an article about the rule change:

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/5115141.html

Quote:In the aftermath of Appalachian State's shocking 34-32 victory over then-No. 5 Michigan — one of the greatest upsets in college football history — the AP said there should be no rule against ranking a lower-division school as long as that team competed against a Division I-A opponent. The poll has been limited to those teams playing in the former Division I-A, now known as the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Technically, it's not a lower division, but a lower subdivision. FCS/I-AA teams are still Division I.

RE: Appalachian State
Yeah, FBS and FCS are MUCH easier to know which you're talking about.

It only makes me want a playoff that much more -- to totally f*** up their new and lame naming system.

RE: Appalachian State
I guess FBS isn't that bad, if you think about. Full of BS.

The idea was to emphasize that the subdivisions are only for football.... Some of the schools who play I-AA football were being called I-AA in basketball, baseball, etc., or worse yet, Division II (go watch the remake of "The Longest Yard," where App State is called D-II).

I agree these names aren't the best solutions, but I see their point. I can't count the number of times, even on this board, that people have referred to them as D-II or non D-I teams.
