I tend to agree. The current set-up of nine teams is just fine.04-cheers

Expansion is a totally meaningless topic of discussion as far as I'm concerned. I write that because there is not one word on any internet forum that has any relevance to any possible expansion of any conference including the W.A.C. People can "talk" about it all they want but in the end their opinions mean absolutely squat. The only opinions about expansion that really matter are the opinions of the people who are actually in charge of making that decision (the school presidents and the conference's director/commissioner, etc.). ALL other opinions are completely and totally meaningless.03-cool

But it is clear that there are a number of people here (and on other websites) who are completely and totally obsessed about discussing it. It seems that is all they can talk about.

Agreed!
And if it is discussed, it should be a summer topic when there is little else to discuss...
It is college football season damn it and college basketball season is almost here.....
Lot's for college sports fans to talk about....

Maybe this got lost in the sea of opinions, but the subject came up in response to comments by Karl Benson at the WAC Media Day last week. Here's an excerpt from the Nevada Appeal article that got it rolling:

<!--QuoteBegin--Darrel Moody wrote+--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td>QUOTE (Darrel Moody wrote)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->
COACHES DON'T LIKE SCHEDULE

The nine-team conference is a tough one to schedule, and none of the coaches are ecstatic about this year's schedule.

Because of nine teams and TV appearances, which means no travel partners, games in the WAC are being played on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

In the past, WAC teams would play a traditional Thursday-Saturday schedule for the most part, and you would either be at home or on the road for both games. The new schedule does call for split weekends for teams, meaning they could be at home on a weeknight and away on a Saturday or vice versa.

"It's tougher," Fox said. "The travel is brutal. We play Boise on a Thursday night, and Hawai'i will come into Reno before we do."

Boise State's Greg Graham agreed.

"We have five split weekends; the most in the conference," he said.

Louisiana Tech's Keith Richard was much more politically correct. The Bulldogs are the Eastern-most school in the conference, and all of their trips except to Las Cruces will be lengthy.

"We knew this four years ago when we got into the conference," he said. Previously, the Bulldogs played in the Sun Belt Conference.

Benson knows that the coaches are frustrated.

"We knew it would be a challenge going in," Benson said. "We'll continue trying to work with it. Adding a 10th team will always be on the radar. There is an advantage to a 10-team league."

Benson said that he's had two or three inquiries about future openings in the league. The University of Denver has shown some interest.

"We are doing everything we can to build the WAC and make it a better league," Benson said.

Obviously, if the WAC is going to jump at a 10th school, the conference would like it to be in close proximity of another member, which would make it easier for basketball.

I'm excited about football too, but can't we talk about more than one thing at a time? Are you some of those people that have trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time? 03-wink

I do agree, but in the WAC's case Karl Benson is talking about it this time, not the fans. He failed to mention the schools, so that is what people are analyzing.

However it is football season, we are all WAC members so Go Aggies let's upset those Broncos. (In more ways than one. :bluethumb: )

I, too, believe that nine members is just fine but that is because my prime focus is football. Nine allows for a 4 home and four away league schedule. I can see that it could be problematic in basketball. I think 10 teams would make sense in football if we had the well established 2 school regional rivalries like the Pac 10. Not having that (Boise State/Idaho could develop that way), nine is fine. If we shift from nine, I think 12 works well with divisions. The other question that expansion brings up is whom do we add. There is nothing else available out here unless we want to add non-football schools (ugh!!). The next move will come from the Big East when it again raids C-USA and the MAC to go to twelve teams. That will create a rolling effect working its way west. :)
