RE: Forget SH and ND, let's dump DePaul and add Memphis!!!
Thanks for the info Frank the Tank...However, I do have one more question. With all of the challenges you just mentioned, why does Depaul seem so cheap when it comes to the hiring of a head coach for men's basketball. When you look around and see what Nova, G-Town and even Providence are paying their coaches..it seems unrealistic for any administrator at DePaul to expect success given the issues you talked about and the lack of an " big time coach".
DePaul may be useful in terms of getting the game of the week shown on a big market, but they are going to get steamrolled in this league untill they get somesort of direction.

Because Ray Meyer spoiled them. He worked at that place for 40 years and he always talked about the school and his players as family; but the school treated Ray and Joey Meyer like inventory in a business.
DePaul's success was centered upon Ray and Joey Meyer's ability to recruit players out of Chicago's Public and Catholic leagues. In the 80's Joey Meyers got away from that base and started recruting players nationally like Tony Jackson from San Francisco; Rod Strickland from New York; Dallas Comegys from Philadelphia. The players were fine, but by going national Joey hurt DePaul's recruiting base in Chicago. The base was hurt so much that in the 80's many kids that probably would have considered and/or attended DePaul, chose to go to many other national programs. Of course DePaul started losing basketball games and so they eventually canned Joey.
If you live in Chicago, then you know that DePaul went on a large construction spree about 10-15 years ago. I have heard that they are in some debt, which might be another reason as to why they are so cheap with their coaches.

They should have done whatever it took to keep Dave Leito. He had them on the upswing.

DePaul has never been consistently good, but for the late 70s and 80s, when MU was down and ND was sliding, and it had its own national tv contract on WGN. DePaul hasn't drawn well in 20+ years. Their arena is at least 1/2 hour from campus and a dump. The school is $200+ million in debt. That said, I still think DePaul can win. However, I don't think DePaul has positioned itself for long term success. The school can use the Richardson, Simmons era approach, namely, to grab local talent despite various issues with players. However, they have had a tendency to pull the rug out from under their coaches once success arrive. Deny admission to Sam Cassell, etc. once they start believing that these types of players damage the reputation of the school. On the other hand, its a commuter college, for the most part, leaving them behind most other schools when it comes to recruiting the true student athlete. As such, they haven't been able to build a solid program like say, Wisconsin (very few stars, but a lot of very good, solid players and students).
I think Depaul either has to break the bank and invest in a high profile name coach to bring in the top Chicago talent (and look the other way if they get in trouble) or invest in the facilities to make it a desirable destination for the student athlete. Build an on campus arena. Buy time to make sure your games are broadcast live on the radio, etc. DePaul is stuck in the middle, not knowing what it wants to be or do.
OMG, Nolan Richardson would make them a force. To this day that man remains a hero to me, despite us losing to them. I can still say that guy is a hall of fame coach. Best coach out of basketball, the man gets fired because he stands up against a racist regime?

I dunno... we lost to them last year... and Seton Hall... and Providence. Pretty much the three schools the people on here ***** about. Therefore, as a UC fan, I've learned to STFU!

wvucrazed Wrote:Although I'd prefer Boston University over St. Louis. Would love for the league to be back in the Boston market. BU would seem to fit along side nicely with the other Eastern non-FB schools. It would take them a while to compete, sure, but eventually there's no reason why they couldn't step up in competition, IMHO.
Would never happen, BU isn't Catholic. If the Big East ever goes to 18, it'll be St. Louis on the basketball side. All the other good Catholic candidates are either in current Big East markets or the West Coast.

If the BE split & both leagues got automatic bids in the NCAA's expanding to 12 could work. This scenario assumes Notre Dame never joins a football league & Villanova makes the move to 1A.The bball league might be a little thin at the bottom.
Non 1A Football Conference
1.Georgetown
2.Seton Hall
3.St.John's
4.Providence
5.DePaul
6.Marquette
7.Notre Dame

9.Dayton

3.West Virginia
4.Louisville
5.Cincinnati
6.Rutgers
7.Connecticut
8.South Florida
9.Villanova
10.Memphis
11.East Carolina
12.UCF
