Del.icio.us Facebook Digg Reddit Newsvine Buzz up! MTSU football head coach Rick Stockstill said he has ended his preliminary search to hire an offensive coordinator.

The job posting closed last week, and Stockstill said he has identified principle candidates to fill the position left vacant by former offensive coordinator G.A. Mangus, who was hired as South Carolina quarterback coach on Jan. 9.

Stockstill would not specify the exact number of finalists for the job, but he said each candidate has acknowledged serious interest in the position. Stockstill, who is on the road recruiting this week, has not formally interviewed all the finalists.

But Stockstill said each finalist is from either the Division I-A college ranks or NFL, and all have previous offensive coordinator experience.

“There are no I-AA guys; I can tell you that,” Stockstill said. “And they will be coming here with coordinator experience. There are no first-time coordinators, and it will be a guy who we can have and stick to what we’ve done before in running the spread (offense).”

Stockstill plans to hire the offensive coordinator just before or after National Signing Day on Feb. 4, and he hopes to have the new coach on the job and on campus by Monday, Feb. 9.

MTSU’s job posting for a cornerbacks coach will be closed Friday, and Stockstill hopes to hire the new defensive assistant shortly after the offensive coordinator hiring.

Former cornerbacks coach/special teams coordinator Antonio Goss was hired as Louisville’s safeties coach on Jan. 16.

“We are having incredible interest in our offensive coordinator position, and I could not be more pleased with the quality of candidates,” Stockstill said. “I am also excited about the calls and interest I am getting for our open cornerbacks job. ... We should have a person in place for that position shortly after signing day.”
