new conference name?
If there is a split, and if the BB schools keep the Big East name (which I hope they don't) ...
Let's hear ideas for what you think the best new name for a conference would be. No teams and all that junk, just what a good new conference name could be.
I've heard for a long time now the EAC (Eastern Atheltic Conference). Not sure I like it. What are some other good ones?

Avoid numbers (such as Big 10) and geographically-descriptive terms such as "coast" which are too restrictive and potentially problematic (see "Big 10").
I recommend "EAC", which stands for "Eastern Athletic Conference". "Eastern" can be interpreted to mean east of the Mississippi River (or the eastern 1/3 of the US).

That might start a rather disturbing trend... Conferences whoring their names out for sponsorships. I mean we already have a ******* Chick Fil-A bowl, what's next?
Imagine this conversation.
Guy 1: Who do you think will win the Kentucky Fried Chicken Conference?
Guy 2: I like Tennessee this year. After all, they have a very talented coach in Big Mac Pearl.
Guy 1: Yeah, but there's no way they get more bids than the Roady's Truck Stop conference. Go Boise State!
On the plus side, this would be one more step towards a bid in the Orange Bowl. There's no way Fed Ex would turn down the conference they sponsor. Especially if we added Memphis for #9.

RE: new conference name?
The football schools would be the members to split away, so the privates would keep the Big East name. They have pretty much solidified themselves in the Big East forever.

I say call it the metro conference and have these members:
Pitt
WVU
L'ville
Memphis
Cincy
USF
UCF
ECU
Syracuse
Rutgers
UConn
Now thats a conference IMO.

RE: new conference name?
This league is not splitting unless the FB schools are forced to expand to 12 members to keep the BCS bid as long as that financial pot of gold is available to the league along with the BB and FB TV contract. The conservative BE will hang together adding a FB only, an all sports school, or by hammering out a scheduling arrangement with a school like Temple if they are forced out of the MAC for FB only. In the mean time the FB get out jail free card will continually be extended if need be to keep the FB schools in the fold.
Right now a smart way to go would be to get 2 games each from Army and Navy, and get Temple to play their 4 OOC games with the BE for decent payouts or return games and bowl considerations to fill one of the 5 OOC slots on a regular basis. The tie in with Army and Navy would also allow the the BE to take their minor DC bowl slot in years when neither is eligible or when Navy is contracted to another bowl like the Poinsettia bowl and Army is not bowl eligible.
Teams like Rutgers and Conn who already play Army, Navy, and Temple on a regular basis could continue to schedule 1 for 1's with 3 Florida schools like UCF, FIU, and FAU for a Florida game every year when USF plays up north. FIU, and FAU can get access to the Dolphin Stadium if need be and are expanding their stadiums to 45K. They also have access to the southern Florida - Miami recruiting hotbed, while UCF with a 45K stadium in the Orlando tourist hotbed and Central Florida recruiting area would provide another great warm weather destination. Of course if they could schedule Miami that would be better but there doesn't seem to be any interaction between them and Rutgers and Conn right now. They seem content to only schedule USF right now out of the BE.
The BE schools could continue to schedule a I-AA opponent as they do right now for the second OCC game and continue to fill out the rest of their schedules with ND (for the schools they will play) and variety of B-10, ACC, B-12, SEC, and CUSA opponents even if they are teams from the bottom of those leagues if the big name schools won't play them. If the bottom and the middle tier schools are good enough in the BCS conferences to give National rankings to the big boys in their conferences, they shouldn't hurt the BE schools National and BCS rankings either.

RE: new conference name?
Panite I agree with much of your post.. though I have not heard any rumors of even extending the get out of Jail free card.. which says to me they will just keep things as they are. I don't see any additions in the next 3 to 5 years. not fb only not all sports.. Scheduling headache is far overstated.. BE FB schools just don't yet want to do whats neede to cure the problem.. schedule some 1 for 1s with non bcs middle of road teams, Ideally within 3 to 7 hours of school with home games on the year where you only get 3 home conf games. dealing with the headaches of schedule is more than worth it to keep the current bcs $$$ split 8 ways.

Super East Conference
Atlantic East Conference
Big 9 Conference (assuming 1 invite to get to 9 teams)
If the bball only schools let you keep the Big East name then they can become the HRC (Holy Rollers Conference).
