The last paragraph is why you first saw a Liberty Bowl Alliance then subsequently the formation of CUSA.

Interesting read. Things are not static; they will change again. No one really knows how.

On a side note, funny that Klingler from Houston is on the cover. I say that because Houston didn't make any noise during expansion. If the Big XII ever went to XII + II --> Utah and Houston?

So by today's standards, would SI have featured Timmy Chang or Colt Brennen on the cover? For some reason I think Brennen may have been on one, not sure.

Ah, what could have been.......

That could have been A LOT of fun.

Plus, it is funny to read something written 18 years ago. The same problems exist now that existed then. With all the changes, nothing changes

Ah, what could have been.......

The SEC and ACC wisely realized that if such a conference ever came to occur it would be a major threat to their existances....hence some expansion to pick off FSU and USC the biggest pieces on the board at the time.

Georgia Tech joined the ACC in 1978 and won a national title for the ACC 8 months before that article was written.
