Unusual Conference/Division Names
The Big Ten's harshly criticized use of "Legends" and "Leaders" made me curious about other leagues having rather unusual division names. A few examples I found:
  • NFL, 1967-1969: The Eastern Conference consisted of the Capitol and Century divisions, while the Western Conference consisted of the Coastal and Central Divisions.
  • NHL: Until 1993, the Clarence Campbell Conference consisted of the Norris and Smythe Divisions while the Prince of Wales Conference consisted of the Adams and Patrick Divisions. They would become the Western and Eastern Conferences, respectively.
  • National Indoor Football League - Nothing unusual about the names Pacific and Atlantic, but they were used as conference names instead of as division names. Obviously South Dakota does not conjure up anything related to the Pacific Ocean, and Kentucky isn't exactly on the Atlantic Ocean-but in 2004 Lexington, the Atlantic Conference Champion, beat Sioux Falls, the Pacific Conference Champion.

It also sounds like the Legends division is all in the past, nothing in the future.

Meanwhile, the 'Leaders' are expected to win now. So are the games fixed?

Dumn.

You just wonder how much thought went into their name selection process. I'd guess not much...

I think it's a strategy. First use horrible names that everyone hates, then you change them to the names you wanted all along. People stop complaining b/c they're better names than before.

Same strategy NBC used when replacing Jane Pauley. Deborah Norville was never expected to last, people were going to be unhappy no matter what. She was a sacrifice.

I'm thinking the Big 10talevenohwait12 needs to learn to count first before they move on to something else.

Then again, maybe they can get Ohio State on one side of the playground, Meechigan on the other, and have the remainder in the middle for a little game of "pick teams". We can have the OSU division and the UM division. 05-stirthepot
