RE: The Future of CAA Football
The CAA is one of the premiere conf in FCs and it's having trouble keeping itself together. If UMass leaves the CAA looses the entire North Division in the span of five years. I could see the top half of the CAA going to FBS in mass bringing the top couple of teams from the Big South and Southern with them, to form a new nonBCS FBS conf.

Umass left and Nova is still considering. Hofstra and Northeastern dropped their f/b programs. What will happen now with Maine and New Hampshire?

True. Thanks. So that leaves Maine and New Hampshire way up north while the conference seems to be shifting south. Old Dominion joins this year and Georgia State in 2012. Travel cost go up for Maine and New Hampshire. This is not a big thing for FBS schools but it is a major concern for most FCS schools. The MAC says they are not expanding any further so Maine & New Hampshire can't move up. So will they follow Rhode Island to the Northeast Conference?

Maine doesnt have the budget to move up. New Hampshire has the budget but doesnt want to. A good bet would be both of them in the Pioneer if they move to offering scholarships.

RE: The Future of CAA Football
If the CAA wants to keep NH and Maine, it needs to court Forhdam and Stony Brook. Forhdam is looking to offer more scholarships. The Patriot League will not go to fulll scholarship status, so a move of its football program to a higher level of competiion is probably in the future. Stony Brook is playing in the Big South. Moving to the CAA would both be a step up and bring in more regional rivals.

RE: The Future of CAA Football
I doubt that the Pioneer League is going to scholarships. I can see the Patriot League going to scholarships before the Pioneer. New Hampshire may be able to hang in there with the longer travel but I think it is going to be a problem for Maine with the smaller budget. I agree one way to keep both of them in the conference is for the CAA to extend invitations to Fordham and Stony Brook. However, in view of their recent expansion direction, I don't know if the CAA wants to stay in the north.

Frankly I dont think the CAA knows what it wants to do.

Isn't Georgia State also on an island? Aren't the closest CAA football playing schools in Virginia? No North or South Carolina schools or have I overlooked someone? As the CAA now stands, Georgia St has to play its football games in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania (if Nova stays), Rhode Island (for 1 year) New Hampshire and Maine. Not much better then Maine and New Hampshire's situation.

RE: The Future of CAA Football
The next football member will be Charlotte. That is an easy drive from Atlanta. Although then they will both be out in left field together, the way NH and Maine are out in right field. The difference is that GaSt and Char are in big cities and expanding markets. Both U's have the will and probably the $$$ to expand their programs and maybe move up to FBS. On the other hand, NH and Maine appear to both be on death watches as far as CAA football goes.

I have read that Charlotte would only be moving through the CAA and not staying in it for any length of time. Charlotte has already indicated that it eventually wants to move up to FBS. For that reason the CAA might not give Charlotte an invite. Ga St is a member of the CAA for its other sports while Charlotte is a member of the A-10 for all other sports.

On the other hand, NH and Maine appear to both be on death watches as far as CAA football goes.

Agree. For this reason they may follow Rhode Island to the Northeast Conference as football only members (especially Maine). However, that would bring the NEC up to 12 football playing member. Don't know if the NEC wants to go that high. With 10 members they will play 9 conference games and 2 out of conference game. Twelve members would take away out of conference match ups.
