I believe WVU-VT play for the "Black Coal Trophy" so why is Ed Pastalong canceling this series but agree to the Marshall/ECU games.

VT would bring more people to Mountaneer staduim then ECU
VT would have more "Meaning" 1 win over VT is better then 5 over ECU/Marshall

Is it WVU AD or the VT ad that is ending this game???

From my understanding it is the VT AD who does not want to play us anymore...we tried to get a long extension as soon as we knew of them leaving for the acc but they wouldn't allow it.

It is my understanding that both sides weren't really thrilled with the idea of continuing the series

-- Virginia Tech was upset about fan behavior during the last game in Morgantown and wanted to make sure that all games in the future would be played in the afternoon or at a neutral location

-- VTs jump to the ACC hit WVU hard since the Hokies were the only other rural football oriented school in the BE....West Virginia's administration felt betrayed by Jim Weaver's flip flop on the issue especially since the Mountaineers had been the ones to get VT into the league in the first place...However, from what I understand the straw the broke the camel's back is when VT cancelled the WVU/VT bball series (one that WVU has dominated) when the Hokies became members of the ACC....that bball series had been played every yr since both teams were in the old Southern conference and it really rubbed our officials the wrong way

-- Also a factor in all of this was that RichRod and our AD didn't want to play too many non conference games against the ACC (bowls hate rematched)...and given the choice of Maryland or VT...Maryland was decieded upon in large part because of the factors I described above

-- Rumor has it that VT offered to play WVU in football a couple times in Washington DC as a trial run to see if the series couldn't be moved there permenatly...but our administrators weren't keen on the idea of moving the games away from campus...and before negotations went any further the Gov of WV basically handcuffed the Mountaineers by focing them to play Marshall as our 12th game

The MD series was tied up until 2012 before any of the conference realignment happened, so I don't believe it was ever a choice between MD and VPI. MD was set in stone.

Even if we wanted to play VPI now - and supposedly a renewal of the series was under discussion - we couldn't because of the Marshall debacle. There were hard feelings on both sides, and certainly WVU was irate about the BB series being cancelled (although, frankly, I don't know why WVU would care if we no longer played VPI in BB, considering how strong the BE is).
