the WVU bball program is facing an interesting probelm these days....
Quote: West Virginia coach John Beilein faces a tough call on Jonnie West, the son of ex-WVU great Jerry West. There is a growing sentiment that Beilein should offer him a scholarship, even though the rising senior guard is not a clear Big East player

-- Right now the kid is playing in the Memphis area...but as the blurb said it is not clear the kid has the talent to play in the BE...and the pressure in West's son at WVU would be great...look forward to seeing how this one plays out

IMO, that's about as silly as UNC offering Jordan's kid. Not ALL children of athletic legends are guaranteed legend status much less even above-average skills. There's a reason the Barry family is one of the very few in the NBA. It might be great pub, but is it really wise to throw away a scholarship in a league that is going to be as tough as this one?

He doesn't. The kid belongs in Division III. It's not a knock against the kid, it's just the way it is. He simply isn't as talented as his father.

How many kids are as talented as his father? That's not exactly the standard to shich recruits should be held.

True enough, but consider the fact that he doesn't even show up in ANY recruiting site's Top 100 players for 2006. I'm not sure what players are on WVU's wish list for 2006, but I just can't imagine they can afford to give a scholly to a kid who doesn't even garner attention by the sites whose sole job it is to review the next big thing. Again, no amount of PR can be worth letting a scholarship rot on the end of the bench.

Put it this way: he's not being mentioned by anybody connected with recruiting in the Memphis area...period. This thread is the first I've even seen his name mentioned anywhere...and I live in Memphis. Maybe he's going to be an invited walk-on.

-- I think that is a comprimise everyone could live with....the West familty certainly isn't hurting for cash so sending Jonnie to WVU shouldn't be that big of a deal

-- a player that is not very athletic can still excel in WVUs program is he is smart and can shoot the ball....Coach Beilein's son Patrick is evidence of that

Apparently young Jonnie attended a NIKE camp with Michael Jordan's son...here is another blurb

Quote:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NIKE CAMP...

Jonnie West is 6'2" 159lbs. Scoop is with the slight build he will need time to grow into the player he could become. FLA and FLA ST have shown the most interest but WVU is the "BIG ONE" I'm looking at now. He has downplayed his dad's connection but says "I really like Coach Beilein and the way they play. He's probably the most underrated coach in the country."

Someone needs to feed that boy some potatoes and pasta.
