That's funny. if it weren't for the aforementioned schools, many of these other schools would be in the WAC or the Metro right about now.
Drivel. Moves like this one weaken the conference. If you can't see that, then you have been hit in the head with a big round orange ball too many times.
I have no issue with Memphis being added in Oly sports. As far as FB goes, we already have some teams that have to prove their value. Belaboring the point is counter-productive.
Pandering to the BB schools because of a few losses at the expense of the FB divisions will only continue destabilizing the conference. TV partners aren't going to pay top dollar for "high interest" games like SDSU-Memphis. We don't need cream puffs. We need competitors. That raises our value for TV contracts.
This move will be a mistake, if it happens.
Quit losing your mind over this. This is an obvious business move.
1. Memphis and its obvious supporters have the money and are already investing large amounts of money to put their facilities on par with the rest of the country.
2. Memphis has a powerhouse basketball program and has a long history with the Big East teams and the new teams coming in from CUSA. Adding this school increases the chance that they decide to stay if another conference comes calling. Unlike BSU fans some schools do really care about Basketball.
3. The head honcho of the Beast keeps repeating over and over that we will have the largest media area combined when it comes to potential number of TV sets. This move adds another very large market to that folder when it comes to negotiations.
4. Memphis is more western then the other Beast teams and being allowed to join would volunteer to be in the West division.
5. This move by the Beast to add Memphis shows that almost certainly that AQ bids are going away. This shows that the only thing important when it comes to expansion is large markets. All these cute little small market teams that are wanting in and think they deserve it better just give up cause its not happening. They may be good and have a nice history but moving forward large markets is what it is all about.
Don't quite get your cavalier attitude. We're a FB only add. FB is what we need to focus on. Their BB program is immaterial to us. Don't think we'll be seeing too much BB revenue from the BE. But as I stated, I wouldn't object to Memphis as a BB/Oly sports add.
The head honcho of the BE is showing remarkable short sightedness if he thinks "potential" big markets are the catch of the day. Better grab SJSU, NM & UNLV! Some day, those markets might be worth something!
Memphis FB isn't a huge draw. And they won't be until they get a decent team/coaching staff together. That doesn't happen overnight. Just ask NM & UNLV.
Who the heck is lining up to snag Memphis again? B12? SEC? B10?
Yep, they see the *potential*, don't they?
So Memphis' "huge market" is going to provide bumpkiss to our TV contract negotiations. In fact, Memphis will probably negatively affect our negotiations because who will tune in during games involving that powerhouse when they visit our other huge markets? That means the TV partner will have to handicap or write off 8 conference games that involve Memphis. Yay!
Volunteering to be in a western division is a reason to add a team? Wow, how low our standards have gone. We'd add better teams if only they'd play in our western division...but none will come except Memphis...
Nope, TV has always been defined by entertainment value. That's what made BSU the value-added resource it is today. And it should be the reason we consider a team like Southern Miss. I'd watch SDSU-So.Miss over SDSU-Memphis any day of the week. And I'm guessing a great many other CFB fans would too.
Cream puff games don't draw large audiences. Competitive games do.
