GT doesn't offer women's ice hockey. Or rifle. Or wrestling. Or women's field hockey. Or men's soccer. Or women's soccer. Or men's water polo. Or women's water polo. Or women's golf. Or men's LAX. Or women's LAX. Or women's rowing.
GT offers men's:
Baseball*, Basketball, Cross Country, Football*, Golf*, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Track & Field
And women's:
Basketball*, Cross Country, Softball*, Swimming & Diving, Tennis*, Track & Field, Volleyball
* => Ranked program.

While that sounds all well and good it is apparent that GT is performing horribly in relation to their peers. Of the big 5 conferences, only Mississippi at 217 ranks lower. The only other teams from those leagues over 100 are 102 Oregon State and 160 Texas Tech. The averages are near 50 or below for these conferences.
So it doesn't take a hockey program or women's soccer to place well. I suspect GT will do better once the rest of the Winter and Spring sports are added.

Somehow you get points for every post season appearance in all the sports the NCAA has I think. You'll have to read more about it on their site if you want more detail than that.

Texas Tech offers 15 programs.... same as GT.
Oregon State offers 17 programs.... two more than GT.
Ole Miss offers 14 programs ... one less than GT.
For shopping comparison sake .... Wake ... the smallest school in D-I football ... has 16 programs. Moving on up ... Boston College has 29 programs. Moving on up ... Stanford has 36 programs. Notice what it takes to win ... the most and strongest post-season appearances in the most sports. If you compete in literally 1/3 the programs ... you have no chance of ever winning no matter how good your athletic department is.

If VT finishes that high, it would be by far our best final ranking ever.

In DI they score 20 sports. 10 for each gender. Teams that don't sponsor 20 sports are automatically at a disadvantage.
Here's the page with all the rules

The scoring formula is skewed towards the schools fielding the most teams because they score the 10 highest ranked men's sports and 10 highest ranked women's sports. Schools with more than 20 sports get to dump their lowest scoring ones while schools that have less than 20 are stuck with whatever they have because there is no margin for error. Stanford sponsors a million sports, thus has won the cup for 17 consecutive years. In essence this is an award for the athletic departments with the most sports.
It's also still only 2/3rds of the way through the season, with spring sports still to be counted.
Here's how each school in each DI conference finished last season.

However, I believe they only score the best result out of of indoor and outdoor track, so subtract two (men's and women's side) from schools like Pitt.
