What it is about Rivals that draws the lunatic fringe of most fanbases?

Oh, saw that the original post was by RutgersAl. Explains a ton.

That guy's the best. It's kind of a shame he doesn't post here.

What's his saying? Rutgers - Harvard during the week, USC on Saturday? USC of the East?

He's known for saying USC of the East... that entire thread is comic gold.

I'd say the Vanderbilt of the east but that would be an insult to Vanderbilt.

USC existed before California was a state. Ergo, USC means South Carolina.

Might want to check on your dates for which USC was actually a university first.

RE: Rutgers is better than USC
Nobody outside of South Carolina thinks of USC as University of South Carolina. To the rest of America, USC is University of Southern California. I have live in North Carolina three years and had NO IDEA the South Carolina Gamecocks called themselves USC til last November when another thread debated this. I had never thought about it before, it was always the Irish on TV playing the USC Trojans growing up!

USC, by default, is Southern Cal.

That is correct. I always have and always will refer to the school that produced O.J. Simpson as Southern Cal.

Two reason why I will always refer to them as Southern Cal and not USC:

1) That is what they used to be called for decades.

2) They hate it.

I've been in Raleigh for 37 years. Most (95%+) think of USC as the University of South Carolina.

Is he referring to a local (NJ) high school that goes by USC?

No, he relates Rutgers' academics to be on par with Harvard M-F and Rutgers' football to be on par with the University of Southern California on Saturday.

If you look up the word "homer" in the dictionary, you might see his picture.

South Carolina: 1801
Southern Cal: 1880

While it still predates Southern Cal, I believe South Carolina was known as South Carolina College until 1865 when it became the University of South Carolina.

But despite the 15 years advance heads up to the USC name, in terms of branding, the Trojans will forever be known as USC to most of America. South Carolina is an afterthought in comparison.

Cheers,
Neil

We'll compromise: USC is Southern Cal and Tech is Georgia Tech.

This was a prime example of southern humor. I have a brother that lives in upstate NY (Watertown). It took him a while to pick up on the humor too. Or maybe he is being nice and just laughs anyway??
