Seems to me most people are getting hung up on the conference name. In the end it's really the "new" eastern FBS conference that has been bandied about for the last few years, the only difference being either A) there will be 2 western teams included, or B) there will be east and west divisions with the least amount of crossover games as possible.

This is what I've been saying the naysayers all along. It excites me because it is the closest thing to creating a new conference without being able to actually do it. If it includes a big contingent of FCS teams moving up then it's the best of both worlds. you get FBS with competition you can handle out of the box. This will equal growth in fan base that will be huge. Take the WAC stigma out of it and take the huge upside.

RE: FCS group to join with WAC?
Some one on APP State Rivals site posted this on 7-3-12.

"Listened to Jeff Hurd, acting WAC commissioner as he was interviewed on Sirius XM college sports nation (Ch. 91) last night. He was asked about expansion efforts in light of departures from the WAC and whether any progress had been made. I'm paraphrasing, but he said that progress has been made but not to the point where he would like to be at this point. He said that he's hopeful that in approx 3-4 weeks time, or around the end of July, that there would be more concrete information to share. He did say that any expansion efforts would likely have to come outside of the west coast and that it would likely have to involve FCS programs looking to move up. He basically apologized for not being able to mention specific schools and said that had to do with confidentiality agreements. But he did say that there have been discussions that have taken place with prospective members. Sorry this is so vague but he basically had to talk around the specifics due to confidentiality but at least I thought I'd share this."

Read those posts and it sounds plausible.
Makes me wonder if some of this has dragged so long because JMU was waiting until July 1st for their new president to take over.
Would be virtually forming a new conference with existing WAC members. Imagine the new money distribution proposal doesn't hurt.

FCS group to join with WAC?
Jmu's admin had denied interest about the WAC when confronted about it. I seriously doubt our historically cheap admin is going to want to send non revenue sports out west. I just don't see us biting on it.

If this were to happen, I'd expect the east and west divisions to have as few crossover games as possible. IMO, the problem isn't travel but finding enough schools. I imagine there would need to be at least 8 eastern all-sports members (6 minimum playing football).

The conference could designate appropriate Western teams that NMSU and Idaho play to count as conference games also to cut down on travel even more.

With so many non football schools in the conference, you could have split divisions for all but football and very few, if any, cross over games.

I'm not saying the best solution out there, but it doesn't seem as bad as some are making it to be.

I agree with it not being as bad as some make it out to be. I also think Idaho and NM State will want to move elsewhere if they can in the future, meanwhile we're FBS and can go our own way down the line.
Most JMU fans just see the names Idaho and New Mexico State, and they say "hell no! that's too far!".

RE: FCS group to join with WAC?
Bottom line a couple of years from now it could put JMU, App State, GaSo and several other FCS schools in the FBS. Even if NMSU and Idaho leave for the MWC or whatever by then, would still be in a FBS conference together. Very close to forming an FBS conference from the get go. Sounds like the very most would average one long trip per year with two WAC schools.
You should tell your fellow JMU fans that NMSU is actually New Market State University and to get over it. Ha.
Probably will never happen anyway because NMSU and/or Idaho might just go independant instead of staying in the WAC and fighting to keep it, but if they do it is kind of crazy with 1/3 of the new money distribution being designated to go to FBS conferences. They would each lose a lot of money, not to mention help them with home scheduling.

"Hurd told The Tribune that a group of FCS schools back east, led by James Madison and Jacksonville State, are making a push for FCS status, and could potentially enter into the WAC in time for the 2014 season."

Any validity to this?

another tweet from someone guessed "GA Southern, App State, Liberty, Lamar", and Tony claims 3 of those schools are "dead on". I'm sure it's all but Lamar.

I'd like to see Jacksonville State along with this group including James Madison and Delaware. Basically get a bunch of eastern schools. If schools like Montana don't want a FBS upgrade when the WAC is begging them to take it then invite someone else who wants to be there and will work hard to earn their place and upgrade the conference. There isn't time to wait around on the whims of undecided or schools against FBS.
