Just heard from an ND source I trust
The Big 12 has offered partial membership to ND. They would accept ND's basketball/baseball and Olympic sports.

In return, ND would have to agree to play 4 football games a year against Big 12 opponents.

ND football would remain independent and not join the Big 12. I assume that ND would keep the NBC deal.

No word if ND will say yes to the offer or if this is a "done deal."

Thanks for passing it along, Terry. Looks like more smoke.

Are there 4 teams in the XII that ND would want to play? Texas and Oklahoma for sure, but after that? WVU? And again, what does non-FB membership in the XII offer ND that they don't get in the BE? What does ND do with men's soccer and lacrosse?

I have no doubt that the XII has offered, but what is the realistic possibility that they will accept?

Sweet. Good deal for all parties involved. I would've thought they'd prefer the ACC but I can definately see Big 12 working with ND's Indy status more.

Just to screw with Pitt, I would be in favor of WVU playing ND at Heinz Field as part of this arrangement.

1) Better TV deal for their non-FB sports.
2) Better football scheduling agreements.
3) Better name brands schools to play in other sports.
4) Who cares about soccer and lacrosse? They can play anywhere.

It's pretty much common sense if you think about it. I would've expected ACC instead of Big 12 but I'd imagine the ACC wasn't interested at all in a partial membership. ND solves a lot of "issues" for the Big 12, namely WVU being on an island and offsetting BYU FB only if that's the plan.

If this is true I'd fully expect Louisville to Big 12 smoke to appear VERY soon.

In addition to Texas and Oklahoma, I would guess they would be willing to play Baylor, TCU and possibly Kansas right away just because of the fact Charlie Weis is there and it would be advertised on TV as a grudge match.

My guess is it also helps ND with bowl games, as the B12 would have better secondary bowl tie ins that the Big East will. Probably will help the B12 get more bowls as well, as they could sell having ND as a potential filler. I have always thought it made a lot of sense for the B12 to add ND all sports but FB and BYU FB only. Maybe that ends up happening after all.

Sounds like a bidding war between the Big Texas XII and the ACC.

The B12 doesn't have the balls to tell ND all or nothing?

RE: Just heard from an ND source I trust
If ND and Louisville are gone- things get very interesting....

Hoops schools(7)
Georgetown, St Johns, Villanova, Seton Hall, Providence, DePaul, Marquette
football all sports schools (9)
UCF, USF, Houston, SMU, Cincy, Rutgers, Temple, Memphis, UConn
football onlies
Boise, San Diego St, Navy(2015)

not sure if we'd see a split. I mean- you look and there's in the fb side USF, Cincy, Temple, Memphis, and UConn that are good hoops schools right now. Are there 5 schools that could replace them? I don't think so.

ND isn't taking all or nothing from anyone. They are staying independent, and this is just about which group long term is better to associate with in the other sports.

Why would you tell ND that and then ruin any chance whatsoever at getting them for all sports in the future? It has nothing to do with not having "balls". It has everything to do with making a smart business decision. Notre Dame is going to do whatever they want to do as long as they have a large following and an NBC over the air TV deal that trumps everybody.

Think about this-
from a Big 12 perspective, they get 2 more nationally televised network games every year. That's a pretty good deal there....

ND has been slipping of late, their partial membership in the BE has lead to part of the BE's problems.

B12 lays down the law about coming over and not bowing to their elitist football demands then things will change for the better. The B12 has the tv money to not need ND as much as ND might need them when the BE for all their other sports goes south.

Terry what is the ND read on this? Are they solid to the BE? or would they jump? How about an ACC counteroffer?

Sounds good. It also sounds like an endorsement from the Notre Dame AD and President in favor of the Big XII's position for a playoff in FBS football.
