"BCS" Bowls for 2014 on...
Ok, so my understanding is that there will be 6 bowls that are on 'BCS' level - 2 of which will be used as a rotating playoff system

1. Sugar bowl - ( ? v. ?)
2. Orange bowl - (acc v ND / ?)
3. Fiesta bowl - ( ? v ?)
4. Cotton bowl - (sec v big12)
5. Rose bowl - (pac12 v big10)
6. Citrus bowl - (BE v ?)

Am I correct in my assumption that the Citrus bowl is the same as the CapitalOne bowl? Would it be called the 'CapitalOne Citrus Bowl' just as the 'Discover Orange Bowl' and 'Tostitos Fiesta Bowl' are called?

Also - If the playoff is at the Citrus and Orange bowls one year, where would the BE and ACC play? Would their games just be transfered over to another bowl like the Fiesta and Sugar?

The new bowls are still to be decided. As it stands now, the Big East has no guaranteed BCS game in the new BCS system. Maybe that could change---but that is the way it stands at this moment.

The Citrus Bowl is the name of the stadium in Orlando, but doesn't reference a specific game. UCF played all of our home games in the Citrus Bowl until our on campus stadium was built.

The Citrus Bowl hosts two post-season bowl games: The Capital One Bowl, which is a potential BCS level bowl and has been SEC vs BIG 10 in recent years; and the Russell Athletic Bowl (formerly Champs Sports Bowl) which is NOT a BCS bowl contender and has been Big East vs ACC in recent years.

Right now the Big East doesn't have a contractual tie in to a major bowl

At this point, I doubt the Big East will secure a Contract Bowl spot in the BCS. I think that dream is dead for at least 12 years. The Big East will likely get additional revenue from the BCS based on past participation, but it's going to have to earn their appearances from 2014 on.

The Capital One Bowl is a good target for the Big East, but I think the strategy is to get an eastern bowl and a western bowl to be able to take a more regional approach to assigning bowls.

The Big East has apparently taken the attitude of "we'll get in, because we're going to earn it from now on, not be handed a spot we don't deserve." This blue-collar attitude is exemplary of the poor leadership and lack of clout the conference has.

The Big East will have to endure some slings and arrows, but if they can earn their spots (which they certainly can), they will be fine.

I have absolute confidence in the strength of new Big East football. As long as our schools are given a fair chance to prove worthiness, the Big East will be fine.

Unfortunately, we might not be given a fair chance. However, the deal isn't done yet.

Having a contract with an "elite bowl" does not guarantee a great payout. If the bowls get to negotiate the deals with the networks broadcasting their game individually, I believe the days of the $20+ Million payouts for each participant are over. Especially with a 3 bowl playoff to garner the real money.

And less payout means less to go around the conference (as they are always pooled and divvied up). And that all but guarantees schools paying for the "thrill" of playing a glorified exhibition game that benefits the networks and the bowls at the expense of the participants.

It's the opposite. Remember that these bowl TV deals INCLUDE the semifinal games that they're hosting. So, the ACC essentially controls the TV rights (via the Orange Bowl deal) to at least 4 semifinal games over the next 12 years (and maybe more), whether or not they actually play in those games. The payouts to the conferences that control "contract bowls" will be HUGE because they include the rights to several semifinal games. The only semifinal TV rights that will be shared will be among the "access bowls" (which the power conferences will get a cut of, as well, only not quite as large).

The Big Ten is getting over $23 million per year from Fox for JUST the Big Ten Championship Game. That's more than the Big Ten's current BCS payout. So, the sky is the limit as to how much ESPN just paid for the Rose Bowl rights that INCLUDES several semifinal games (and a huge chunk of those payouts go directly to the Big Ten and Pac-12).
