How do you figure? If anybody's seat gets warm -- it would be Al Groh's. It is time for his defense to start being at least better than mediocre. He's had the time to put in the 3-4. This should be, by his own admission, the first year of full strength 3-4.

PJ earned alot of good will with the Orange Bowl and breaking the UGAg streak. His 6 big priorities for this year, in order:
1) Win a !#$&!!!!#@$EY^!#$ bowl game. Any bowl game. I don't care where it is or who it is against. But you had better win it dammit. Fanbase Importance: 10 of 10
2) Beat UGAg. Fanbase Importance: 10 of 10
3) Up the recruiting quality. Chan's best class is still far better than PJ's. Fanbase Importance: 9 of 10
3) Show a defense with a pulse. Fanbase Importance: 8.5 of 10
4) Show competence in the passing game. Fanbase Importance: 7 of 10
5) 9+ wins. Fanbase Importance: 7 of 10

If PJ doesn't go to a bowl game ... then he's getting much warmer next year. But I don't see how that can happen.

GTS,

The Jackets went 7-6 in Gailey's last season. You're more hopeful than I am that Tech will do better than that this year. I agree that your first 3 reasons are at the top priorities for CPJ issues for the upcoming season. Are you confident the Jackets will win the season opener in Blacksburg knowing that they'll have plenty of time to prepare.

I like CPJ and was thrilled with the job he did turning Navy around, but i just felt that hiring him was an attempt to a mythical disadvantage: that the schools academic standards precluded recruiting top football talent. Looking at the number of players from the Gailey era in the NFL disproves this. Unfortunately, his offense is starting to turning recruits off. I expected this to happen on the offense but it happening to the defense is unexpected as well.

Gailey never earned the good will of the Orange Bowl or a UGAg win. In fact, he was stained with the worst UGAg loss of the modern era ... his team flat gave up after halftime one year. And he lost to Duke.

Gailey got his players when his fate was pretty much already sealed (next to last class). PJ's next year would be year #5, the same year Gailey had the class that lead to the ACC championship.

Most GT fans think the system is fine .... but are skeptical of Groh, wonder if Gailey can recruit elite talent, are deeply frustrated by bowl performance, wonder if PJ can recruit elite talent, and are still just as pissed as ever than UGAg trots out a bunch of neanderthals who would never make it at Tech and win nearly every year.

I like it but with UNC on probation and Miami taking a second year of voluntary bowl sanctions, the ACC won't fill it's bowl allotment.

They should be skeptical of Groh. He sucks! The only time VT lost to a Groh defense was his first year in 2003 when a flaw in VT's defensive system had been exposed and VT lost 5 of their last 7 games. Narrowly beating Temple when they missed a short field goal to force over time. Arron Rogers laughed at our defense in the bowl game. UVA's tight end caught a record 22 catches. The flaw was fixed in the off season.

Defense was never really the problem when he was at UVA. The offense, however, was always a problem.

I actually really respect GT and PJ. I think he's a really good coach and truly like the flexbone style offense he brings to the table. At the same time, I think it's got to be hard to recruit for that system. If a GA kid wants to play in the NFL, it's going to be hard to convince him to play for GT, IMO. I know there are exceptions but GT's offense is just not conducive to producing NFL players.

So do I. In the 4 games between Beamer and Johnson, VT has been fortunate to have gone 3-1 in that stretch. 2008 (some people questioned an official's call near the end), 2010 (down by 14 at one point), and 2011 (losing and about to punt before "the punch") could have all easily gone the other way. GT is definitely a program I respect, and I hope they manage to win their NCAA appeal and get their '09 ACC title back.

The NCAA denied the appeal ... because clearly getting some free GA Aquarium tickets and tshirts was a competitive advantage in the ACC-CG.

And I also hate the NCAA for their post-season ban of all college sports in SC (except regionals in baseball) for a Civil War memorial on the grounds of the State House.

01-wingedeagle

The NCAA is a joke, a farce, a blatantly hypocritical bunch of libtards at face value.

Which quite honestly the nicest thing that could be said about that organization.

RE: ACC football predicitons 2012
Here are my predictions for the ACC Football season:

BC will have the most boring offense in the conference... which every defense will have a hard time getting them off the field
Clemson will zip up & down the field on offense... and defense too.
Duke will play very hard until they are mathematically eliminated from a bowl... at which point everyone will go over to Cameron.
FSU will have the most impressive collection of athletes in the conference... and this may be the year they finally play like it
Ga Tech will irritate every team they play with all of the 4th & 1 conversions and the 18 play drives
Maryland will irritate every team they play with the psychedelic uniforms
Miami will get into even deeper trouble with the NCAA
North Carolina will forget about their football program's NCAA troubles... once the basketball team is investigated
NC State will lose when they are supposed to win and win when they are supposed to lose
Virginia will cheer for the the Wahoos until the game is out of hand... then it's off to the polo grounds!
Va Tech will win every game but one... you'll never guess which one though!
Wake Forest will eliminate somebody from national contention
(did I miss anything?)

I doubt the Syracuse and Pitt fans are ready for the patented death march. The 2009 UVA game in the 3rd Quarter stands out.

Code:
1st-10, GT18     14:53    J. Dwyer rushed up the middle for 1 yard gain
2nd-9, GT19     14:32    J. Nesbitt rushed to the right for 13 yard gain
1st-10, GT32     14:01    J. Dwyer rushed up the middle for 3 yard gain
2nd-7, GT35     13:28    A. Allen rushed to the right for 1 yard gain
3rd-6, GT36     12:56    J. Nesbitt passed to D. Thomas down the middle for 13 yard gain
1st-10, GT49     12:21    J. Nesbitt rushed up the middle for 1 yard gain
2nd-9, 50     11:55    J. Dwyer rushed to the right for 5 yard gain
3rd-4, UVa45     11:21    J. Dwyer rushed up the middle for 2 yard gain
Code:
4th-2, UVa43     10:40    A. Allen rushed to the right for 5 yard gain
1st-10, UVa38     9:53    A. Allen rushed to the left for 6 yard gain
2nd-4, UVa32     9:02    J. Nesbitt rushed up the middle for 2 yard gain
3rd-2, UVa30     8:41    J. Dwyer rushed up the middle for 4 yard gain
1st-10, UVa26     7:59    P. Lyons rushed up the middle for 4 yard gain
2nd-6, UVa22     7:28    J. Nesbitt rushed to the left for 2 yard loss
3rd-8, UVa24     6:49    J. Dwyer rushed to the right for 20 yard gain
1st-4, UVa4     6:26    J. Nesbitt rushed to the right for 3 yard gain
2nd-1, UVa1     5:30    J. Nesbitt rushed up the middle for no gain
3rd-1, UVa1     4:53    A. Allen rushed to the right for 1 yard touchdown. S. Blair made PAT

Quote:CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP)—It was a drive that took forever, or at least it felt like it. Eighteen plays. Eighty-two yards. A game-sapping 10:47 off the clock, the longest in the 21 years that Georgia Tech has been regularly keeping such a stat.

There were 17 runs, only one pass, and it came on a rainy day at the start of the second half. It’s a wonder Virginia had any energy left to keep playing.

That's a good line and I hope so. I expect we'll have to out score Clemson to win, especially if we lose anyone in the secondary.

Don't see it. Kevin Steele and his "Sit back and read the play" defense is gone. The players are raving about how the defense under Venables allows them to attack far more often. While our DL will be young (One SR, the rest of the two deep is either a Soph or Fr) Dan Brooks, a coach never known for coach-speak or cheap praise, likes what he has. One thing for sure, if you are going to get your shots in you better do it this year because 15 out of 22 on the preseason defensive depth chart return next year, and 11 of 22 return for the next two seasons.

the line about Clemson was a joke, as was the entire post... I even cracked on my own team.

As for getting our shots in this year, I tend to agree with you. Based on classes I'm picking FSU this year, Clemson next year, and Va Tech in '14.
[ NC St, BC, Pitt, and GT could all creep in somewhere.]
