That's fantastic!!! Now Virginia won't be the most populous state in the nation without a major professional sports team any more.

Actually, that's a place where an NBA franchise could work.

Just leave the current owner in Sac-town, however.

The Maloof family is behind the move.

And they are Vegas guys but the NBA won't let them move there.

The Virginia Squires!

Would require some realignment of the NBA.

Virginia to the Southeast
Washington to the Atlantic
Toronto to the Central
Milwaukee to the Northwest
Portland to the Pacific

How about the "Norfolk Armada" since it's a Navy town.

Great place for a team. Would create a good rivalry with the Wizards and the Bobcats. The "Virginia Armada" has a nice ring to it.

Yeah, "Virginia Armada". I like that better. I hope the deal goes through.

If this deal goes through, the new arena would be an ideal venue for the ACC tournament.

How about expand to 16 with UConn and Rutgers, have the southern 8 play down to 2 teams in Greensboro, the Northern 8 play down to 2 in New York and then have a final 4 Norfolk or D.C.?

Edit : Or don't expand and just have 7 teams in Greensboro and New York. North south split with Miami in the North.

Apparently the ACC already thought of that.

http://insidebiz.com/news/sources-sacram...deal-works

"In addition, the Atlantic Coast Conference has agreed to place Virginia Beach on its list as a future venue for college ACC conference tournaments."

I can't see Virginia Beach having any interest in naming the team after the city next door.

On the other hand, ODU is in Norfolk. Kings would go with the Monarch theme.

VA Beach is not really a boat Navy community. Maybe something more aeronautical. Unless they go for something encompassing the whole Tidewater region.

True. The Navy base is in Norfolk. There is a Naval air station in Virginia Beach. There are 20+ military bases in the Tidewater area. It would be nice if the team used a military name. I guess it will come down to how many of the cities in the Tidewater/Hampton Roads area actually chip in for the arena.
