Jones reportedly kicked off Irish squad

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

Notre Dame running back Julius Jones has been kicked off the team because of academic problems, the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times reported on Tuesday.

Jones rushed for a team-high 1,375 yards over the last two years. Jones can appeal the dismissal to the school after one year.

Jones will be the fifth starter to leave the team before new coach Tyrone Willingham even steps onto the field. Junior quarterback Matt LoVecchio, a contender for the starting job, decided to transfer. Defensive backs Donald Dykes and Abram Elam and wide receiver Lorenzo Crawford were kicked out of school over their alleged involvement in the sexual assault of a female Notre Dame student.

The Tribune reported that three weeks ago Jones' parents joined their son at a meeting with one of his professors in the Film, Television and Theater department to discuss his academic future. They did not, a source told the newspaper, leave the meeting happy.

Jones has reportedly been dismissed for consistently poor academic performance following a university hearing.

The Irish have just one tailback with game experience on their roster -- sophomore Ryan Grant.
