I don't care what ND does as long as they stay the hell away from WVU, but Dickie V probably has a helluva lot better sources than anyone on this board and he thought it was worth tweeting.

Pitt, Cuse, Miami, and BC are already there and they are regular opponents. Would four games against GT, VT, UNC, MD, UVA, etc. really be that painful? Seems like a better deal for ND than for the ACC.

Just my opinion, but it is not worth "straightjacketing" half the football schedule and tying it to one conference.

It is one thing to play 3 games against one conference or another.

It is quite different to mandate that ND play half its schedule every year with one conference.

Hell, what is the point of being "independent" then?

I hope to hell ND doesn't sell its soul to the devil here.

What's an acceptable level? I would think that it would be 4 ACC games - that would be more than doable since ND practically does that already.

Sporting Illustrated or Sporting News reported earlier in June that ND officials stated they would accept an ACC Olympic only sports invitation....but ACC hadn't extended such an offer.

Why so defensive? All Dickie V said was that ND could go to the ACC. Still a long ways away from ND and the ACC reaching an agreement. ND could sign a deal 3 years from now and Dickie V's tweet would be correct.

OK....just for shats and giggles.....

5 or 6??? Hmmmm.....Pitt, BC, GT, Miami?, Cuse? (rotate #5 and/or #6).

I could see ND being able to "live" with that, especially if it's only 5 games. That leaves 7 games for USC, Michigan, Mich St, etc.

lol defensive? I don't give a flying crap what ND does. And I think it's pretty reasonable to conclude that Dick Vitale has better sources than this board. Not sure why you thought I was being defensive.

Football is never giving up half its schedule to the ACC... seriously? They want to be FOOTBALL INDEPENDENT!!! That is priority #1 in their eyes, said repeatedly!

First, they don't play 'Cuse, Pitt, Miami and BC yearly anyway... they play Navy, USC, Stanford, and Michigan more often... if they were so worried about the first four, they could have signed a partial agreement for football with the Big East and helped push Navy and others in a decade ago to make a true Eastern Football Conference, as the Big East has been their conference partner since the 90's.

Still doesn't mean anything.

It means that an "ACC source", even if reliable, only told Vitale that the ACC's position is that ND could get an everything-but-football invitation only if ND agrees to play 5 or 6 ACC teams in FB every year.

Instead of saying "if ND agrees to play 5 or 6 ACC teams in FB every year", you could just as easily say "if pigs fly".

That's basically my point as well. Agreeing to 4 games is in effect trading a single football game for a permanent, high-quality place to house the non-revenue sports. That seems like a bargain for ND to me. And it seems like the ACC would be paying a king's ransom just to get one game.

There were lots of rumors flying around when B12 made essentially the same offer to ND. I think ND wouldn't agree to more than 4 games and then only against certain B12 teams like the Longhorns and Sooners.

Notre Dame plays 4 current or soon to be ACC schools this year.

Personally I'd be surprised if the ACC went for it with their TV deal already done but it's not a huge stretch to give up one of the Michigan schools or BYU series to get to 5.

The silver lining for the Big East is that Notre Dame leaving will not impact the BE. This is a nonevent for the football brethren. For the basketball schools it hurts them, but not in that big of a way. This also paves the way for the Big East to really ramp up with NBC.

Only wildcard is the Villanova insider that called Syracuse and Pitt to the ACC a couple of years ago says Georgetown or Villanova might be the 16th member. That won't impact the football schools either.

Wonder if UConn would accept an olympic sports invitation if the ACC agreed to play UConn a certain amount of football games, perhaps 6? Then this would be basketball divisions:

ACC/NORTH:
Notre Dame
UConn (or Georgetown)
Boston College
Pitt
Syracuse
Maryland
Virginia
Virginia Tech

ACC/SOUTH:
North Carolina
NC State
Wake Forest
Duke
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Florida State
Miami

Notre Dame isnt going to play 6 ACC games a year of even 4 a year. They either take the ND olympic sports or they do not. There are not going to be any strings attatched to the ND football program. Big East basketball is the best basketball conference in the nation. Its not like Notre Dame is desperate to leave.

I think it is the football bowl situation that is driving Notre Dame to consider this (if, in fact, it is true). My guess is there would be some kind of football ND/ACC bowl agreement also involved that would open up ACC bowls to ND. Having an ND affiliation would also help ACC in strengthening its bowl situation.

If I recall correctly, B12 was going to open up all its bowls to ND except the Cotton Bowl. ACC might open up all its bowls to ND except Orange and Peach Bowl. ND could still play in Orange Bowl, but as the opponent.

Both ND and ACC have some shaky ground they are standing on; a ND affiliation with ACC would e a feather in both ND's and ACC's hat and a lot of positive marketing and image.

I think ND would rather be associated with the phrase "Big 5" even if it mostly applies to football. The ACC is arguably the #1 basketball conference now that they've got Cuse and Pitt. UNC, Duke, FSU, Cuse, Pitt, and yes.....it even looks like the Pack is Back.

It would seem if ESPIN tries to down play the Big East during negoations, this would be the time. Move them to the ACC, break NBC contract, weaken them and BE on BB portion and convince ACC to add a 16th school, maybe from the BE to try and devalue our product. Maybe the FSU/Clemson to Big 12 rumors again for next week have some slight merit. Hope Not.

and in 2009 and 2010, ND played new ACC teams 2x.
2013- 1 game scheduled
2014- 2 games scheduled

So in 4 of the 6 years- they'll have played only 7 games combined in those 4 years vs ACC schools.
