Politics, no, seriously.

True. Political power in Tennessee has always been stronger in East and Middle Tennessee, due to denser population and history. UT-K has jealously opposed UofM at every turn for over 100 years. They are the "flagship" which receives what it wants, while we are the step-child, left to fight for table scraps with the other state schools. And, as was mentioned above, SEC has become an increasingly important advantage. Nevertheless, Memphis can and will some day have great success in football, if the new Big East thrives.

Seriously?

Here's a hint:

One team has been a charter member of the most popular football conf in the nation for 80 years...while another was mostly an Independent Football program till they joined CUSA in 1996.

One has a 100,000 plus seat stadium...and even when they are not good, can still draw 90,000-100,000 fans per game.
What's ironic, and something few people remember, is that Memphis was invited to the SEC in the 1960s, but our then president was too ignorant to realize how important that would be, and turned it down, b/c he didn't want to pay the entrance fee, among other things.

i dont think thats true at all.

Well, I wasn't there, so you could be right. I've been told that by a handful of reliable folks over the years. It's either true, or a well-rooted rumor. Doesn't really matter at this point. I certainly was led to believe it was true, but I'll check around again and see what others know.

KnightLight, take your condescension elsewhere. Obviously, I knew about the SEC and that 100,000 seat stadium didn't pop up overnight. Also, UK is in the SEC and has a 70k stadium and Louisville has still outpaced them.

Did you really compare UK Football to Tennessee Football?

UK has just ONE solo SEC Conf Championship in the approx 80 years that SEC Football has existed and that solo title came over 60 years ago!

Tennessee, obviously going through some troubled years...has approx 20 Divisional/Conference/NATIONAL Titles.

Apparently Louisville fans are just plain unwelcome here. We can't even say nice things about our new conference members without somebody trying to be an a-hole.

You know Tiger fans always welcome the Cards, can't wait to have real rivalry games again with you and the Cats. The record books and highlight films of the past will get dusted off over the next few years..if you guys hopefully stick around. Fun times ahead.

One quick question for you krux: Do they sell the famous (to me anyway) pork chop sandwiches at the Yum Center that they had at FH? I belive it was the KY Pork Producers stand.

No, I think you got that confused with our last AD who said we deserved to be in the SEC.

No, I"m not that old, lol

Since a few people expressed doubts, I poked around some more to see if I could get closer to the truth. It seems that when Carpenter was president, a group of boosters proposed a plan to get into the SEC, which involved paying a large entry fee, among other things, and presented it to Carpenter, who rejected it out of hand. It is unclear whether they even discussed it with the SEC, and we all know they didn't get an invitation. That was an oversight on my part in the original post, and I just now noticed it.

The point is, there was some type of effort to get there, many years ago, but the president didn't buy it, and nothing happened.

RE: Question for Memphis fans
You know, I'm not sure about the pork sandwiches...I'm pretty sure I've seen the KY Pork Producers stand but I couldn't swear by it. I've only been able to make a handful of games so far as I'm not a season ticket holder. So when I've gone it's kind of been overwhelming to tell you the truth lol I kid you not, it's almost sensory overload in that place. There are something like 60 concession stands, a full blown 8800 sq ft sports bar and two "bourbon bars" with full service kitchens and chefs that only certain sections get access too. So unless you're a season ticket holder it's pretty hard to hit everything and remember what you've seen. Trust me, you won't go hungry! :)
