It's actually pretty easy. Rivalries are different from hatreds. Rivalries typically involve a fair amount of respect for the opponent. Just look at OSU-Michigan, and how they both jump to the defense of the other in any national conversation.

Most local rivalries are the same way, where's there's a big portion of the fanbase that just roots for schools where the local high school kids go to play.
