Part of a fairway slid into the river during Irene last year. There's no way you should put a stadium there. (And the city owns the land)

I have a tailgate spot in the "white" lot this year and it is very nice being near the river. The walk to the stadium is a killer!

As do I, and yes the walk is hell, what I remember of the few times I took that walk. I really think they are going to work on a bus shuttle service, it makes so much sense. They are going to have to create more tailgaiting lots somewhere on the southwest part of the campus. They are also going to have to get light rail eventually down to campus with multiple stops throughout the campus.

RE: ODU Master Plan
If you demo WHRO and the elementary school that sure would be perfect but we lose the Monarch March plus we would have to build a large pedestrian bridge across Hampton Blvd. It had been previously stated that because of the golf course being landfill that it would not hold a stadium, that's true in its current state but i remind you that most of lower Manhattan is landfill, Google it. The most logical choice is keep the stadium we got. If you look at Google maps, the corner of the stadium that is closest to Bluestone, that road can be closed from driveway to driveway and make Lockwood a dead end. Unless there are houses and such covered by trees there is nothing on the other side of the road. We don't need that much space and the newly expanded footprint would probably not even reach the other side.

Who would pay to relocate and rebuild both WHRO and an elementary school. Those properties are not owned by ODU. Even if that could be done it would probable double the cost of the stadium project.

I believe whatever is built should be done on the current site keeping only the Ainsle Bldg. and the field. Perhaps they could incoroarate the walls of the clamshells as an homage to the past.

I wonder if you could knock down whitehurst and maybe some of the powhattan stuff and put a big field back there...

You'd have to build more dorms somewhere else I guess, but there's some space back there.

RE: ODU Master Plan
It doesn't matter where each of us would like it to be built. It will come down to the recommendations of the group doing the study for our Master Plan, the actual costs of the project, can the school raise the necessary funds and can we afford it. We have to remember the stadium is just one part of the Master Plan. I'm sure the school will make the right choice. No matter what they choose to do, there will be those on here who will be pleased and others who will not like the decision.

Not that it is any more feasible, but why do we need to tear down WHRO or the elementary school? It seems to me that the the soccer fields and tennis courts behind the school are plenty large enough to build a stadium. It even offers a waterfront view. (Colley Bay)

Perhaps a bridge/walkway across the water to the stadium could connect the village and east side of campus. And I am sure the kids would love to play soccer there when its not in use.

RE: ODU Master Plan
1) invite WHRO to build up the Communications dept.... or add a small broadcasting school and let people intern at the WHRO on campus.
2) The school would be the big problem... but would be nice
3) Can't just use the soccer fields and tennis courts, not big enough when you start talking about transportation and access to that area.
4) Most importantly... I hope we aim high in building the stadium. Don't build something that fits 35K nicely and then in 5 years we have another waiting list. I would rather they build a two tiered endzone and go slowly, than to have a master plan that we out grow in 5-10 years.
*** All of the growth and excitement and waiting lists have happened during a terrible economy... some people have very little extra cash for entertainment and sports. I'm hoping in a few years this will change and more people will want to get involved in ODU sports... private citizens and companies.
***With all the shuffling going on is it completely out of the realm of possibility that we could be in the ... ACC, Big East, SEC, in 5 to 10 years.... before you say yes... remember 5 years ago ODU football games were a dream.
If we go to a big conference... or want to compete with them for recruits in the back of our mind we need to think 50K+ stadium.... not build it today.... but don't build something that you will have to tear down in order to get there in a decade or so.

RE: ODU Master Plan
I know it is new, but what about tearing down the baseball field and building a stadium to host both baseball and football there? You might have to dig into the golf course parking lot, but I think there might be enough room to keep the course itself. Baseball and football could both play at Foreman in the meantime, no?

RE: ODU Master Plan
Isn't the athletic admin building moving to the new practice facility? That entire block with the green lot could be a stadium? shrug. puts the stadium in a more central location and then put the baseball field where Ainsley is. That seems like an excessive amount of waste though.

edit: I wish it were like Sim City.

Campus Master Plan
Since the other thread got locked I figured I would start another one that will hopefully stay on track.

I heard from a buddy of mine that there is another master plan meeting in March that will feature two stadium proposals. We should start hearing more information over the next month.

That's exciting. I've been really impressed with the meetings they've had so far. These people seem to know what they're doing. Have you seen their website? All of the stuff they do is beautiful.
