We may not draw as many as the UofL but  in BB we are in the top 20 in attendance year in and year out.  We ain't no slouch.  I think we averaged 40k plus for a 6-5 football team this year as well - that isn't so bad compared to some of your new conference mates either.
Yep, we sure did! In fact attendance was 18,138. I suspect you were trying to nail me with my own words by thinking we didn't draw for that game, but the game with "bad" attendance for us this year was an exhibition game against a Division II team where we "only" had 14,246. The difference is that is the neighborhood, maybe more, than your season average recently. Its no comparison to 19,000+.

No one doubts Memphis is Top 20 in attendance, or has a storied history. However, in pretty much every aspect I mentioned, UofL is going to come out more favorable. You start talking about programs historically and UofL is pretty much accepted in the #7 to #9 range all-time. There's no debate that Memphis is really even close to that level, just like there's no argument that a handful of programs are clearly above UofL, even our hated rival if we want to start talking titles. And we know, that's where the rubber meets the road. Memphis probably ranks better than any other school that has never won a title but that's a big qualifier considering how many have won it now over the last 65 or 70 years.

As for football, Memphis certainly wouldn't be an outlier in BE attendance, if you threw them in this year they would be 6th of 9 but close to most.

I don't know the statsitics but I would guess you would be surprised if you listed all the national champions in BB over the last 50 years. UCLA has won what 11-12 alone, UK 6-7, Duke and Indiana maybe 4 or so and the UofL, UNC, NC State and others 2 or so. Not many have done it. Besides years ago the NIT was a bigger deal than it is today - no jokes please.

Of course the UofL has a step up on Memphis, never said they didn't but the gap isn't as big as you try to make it.

On another note - do you know where Eastern High School is? I lived near there as a young kid - age 1-6.

Thats a knife that cuts both ways. The last thing Memphis needs is another terrible team on their schedule dragging down that RPI.

For the other Memphis poster, I know where Eastern High is. How old are you? I take it you moved to Memphis.

I am 38. I moved to WV; my fathers home state, grew up there then moved to Memphis around 1987; graduated from then Memphis State in 1990. Became an avid Memphis fan (believe it or not football first) but have roots in WV that is why my love for the Mountaineers. I belonged on a swim team in Louisville at ages 5-6 called I think "Douglas Hills"?

My mother grew up in Hopkinsville, KY and I know you'll love this - she is a UK grad.

I understand that the NIT was the bigger tournament. UofL won the NIT in 1956, and it was much more important then it is now, but already less important at that point then it was in the 1940's. Determining a certain year where the "NCAA passed the NIT in importance" would just be a matter of opinion I think but top teams used to have to choose which one to enter, and it really was a tough choice.

As for who's won the NCAA, this is who's won the title since 1960. This ignores repeat winners, the conference number is how many individual schools have won it over the last 45 years from each league (going by current conference make-up).

BE- 7
ACC- 4
Big 10- 4
SEC- 2
PAC 10- 2
Big 12- 1
Big West- 1
CUSA- 1
Horizon- 1

While we had many repeats, that is 23 different schools for the last 45 years. That's not to say each of those schools is necessarily ahead of Memphis based just on one year, but there are many schools that have won it all.

In my opinion, there's two sides. One side is head to head, and there it is very close. The 2 have always been very competitive and had fierce battles. However, on the 2nd aspect, national results, I don't think the two are that close to be honest. We're talking 2 NCAA titles, an NIT title, & 8 Final 4's v. 2 Final 4's. And that 2nd side is what they work with when people make up what they feel are top programs overall.

Obviously all these lists are opinion, but the list that is used most often is the one put out in the last year or two by Street and Smith. It is fairly well respected and this list is even used in "prop-up" pages of many school's official athletic sites where they brag about their Street and Smith all-time ranking when they mention all-time wins, accomplishments, etc.

The list's Top 15:
1)Kentucky
2)UCLA
3)UNC
4)Kansas
5)Duke
6)Indiana
7)Louisville
8)Arkansas
9)UCONN
10)Cincinnati
11)Utah
12)Ohio State
13)Oklahoma State
14)Arizona
15)Syracuse

The biggest part of their rankings I could find on Google was a link to those 15 plus the #16-25 teams and Memphis wasn't in there. You'd skyrocket even with just 1 title, not that even 1 is easy of course. At least you have your best shot at going deep in a long time this year. I think a good argument could be made to replace a couple of teams in the 20-25 range with the Tigers but I don't think you could go much above that.

I definitely know where Eastern HS is, its on Old Shelbville Rd near the Gene Snyder Freeway in Middletown. (That may ring a bell?) I also ran in numerous track meets at Eastern back in HS. I am younger than you but grew up about 20 minutes from there.

I had a few college friends from Hopkinsville and actually made it down to that area once back in high school. Over the summer break while getting certified to SCUBA dive we did our checkout dive at Dive Cerulean, which is an old rock quarry that is actually in Trigg County. And I must say, in this part of the country, taking the Western Kentucky Parkway from E-town all the way down to Land Between the Lakes ranks right up there for boring, isolated drives!

Anyway, after the dive we drove in to Hoptown for dinner. There were plenty of people our age at the time hanging out in groups in the back of store parking lots, and I have seen that in numerous other small towns. A nice town but maybe lacking somewhat in stuff to do for teenagers! We camped out back at the quarry that night afterwards and spent the night sleeping for short intervals in our tents because the Fort Campbell guys flew right overhead every 15 minutes in Apaches. We certainly got the best night military show that I've ever seen!

It seems like everytime 3601 has a thread over here its either a flame or most certainly a UofL reference. I guess certain folks have to come over here to make a point that is water over the dam. We are not playing get over it. It probably won't be the last time we play, but I guess some people want to make it a bigger issue then what is already is. Threads like this have one purpose and this to "flame" or start a smack thread. It just turned into a smack thread for no aparent reason, his intent was clearly to start one.

Any how, I've always respected the Memphis program and I have enjoyed the rivarly. Honestly I don't understand why alot of Memphis fans claim there program is close to ours in basketball. Let me first say I'm not even dissing Memphis because I think they have a great basketball program and certainly would add to the Big East as an all sports conference memeber, but UofL has been considered one of the top 10 programs of all time by many publications. To me the most impressive thing about that is we haven't really played in what many considered a power conference and we built that type of resume, Cincy has established a top 10 program also. No doubt Memphis has accomplished alot on the basketball court and more importantly you've been to the final 4 alot of programs have not. I've had conversations with Memphis fans were they swear up and down we are on the same level in basketball. Its hard to say that when I look at the head to head and the tradition of both schools. Cincy is closer to UofL in that aspect than Memphis. Alot of UofL fans try to compare themselves to Kentucky, but we can't. I enjoy the banter and the rivalry between both fan bases but, I just want to know what makes Memphis fans feel they are close UofL in regards to Tradition and just the overall basketball program. I can't remember a time where we didn't sell out in basketball, and grossing 18 million last year is pretty impressive. My post isn't even a flame its more a question than anything else. For the most part I know Bambu will give me a intelligent response without a "flame" of some sort. Any thoughts to this Memphis fans? I asked this because I was asked the same thing about UK vs UofL tradition and the reality is we don't stack up with them I don't have any problems admiting that.

I think the reason most Tiger fans feel they are equal to Louisville
is because when it comes to simple head to head play, neither team
has clearly dominated the other. (Our football series is practically tied
and we weren't even that good for a long time.) There have been a lot of
blowouts, close games, and huge wins for both teams. ( like the cusa
tourney last year.) There have been a lot of games played
and all of them have been wars.

The hoops record is in your favor, ( 54-31) but a lot of those wins
came in the 1940's-'60's ( 13 ) . The last 30 years have been
a very different story for Memphis basketball. And even in our bad years,
we have usually given the Cards all they can handle.

Memphis fans are also proud and there's simply no way we're going
to feel inferior to a rival school we've stood toe to toe with for
years.

Even if the series is over, I would look for the Cards to get paired
up in the same bracket with Memphis in the NCAA tourney. TV will
make sure it happens. 03-wink

Douglass Hills is also the name of the subdivision that the pool is in. I’m moved to Louisville (Douglass Hills) when I was 16 and went to Eastern High School. My folks still live in Douglass Hills.

Hey, you can't blame us on this one. We seem to be FINALLY turning the corner that Cal promised 5 years ago. Sadly, no one in C-USA cares. 03-puke

I'll probably have to come over here to find intelligent basketball talk. UL did what they had to do in the last 8 year to get to the next level of college athletics, I don't think anyone can debate that at all.

Hopefully someday your Athletic Department and President, along with UC's, will have a say so in this matter. I think the UofM's chances are better now of someday getting in the BE than before. One day several programs including UC and the UoL's will get tired of the BB only schools calling shots when all the all sports programs can command more power outside the conference. I have a feeling WVU's adminstration feels this way already but don't know that they have any reason to push the UofM in the future.

Until then, if then, Memphis just has to do the best with what it has been dealt.

yes, yes, and yes

My next choice for a very close second is ECU. No I don't want back in CUSA but both of these schools have a way of hating Louisville (jealousy)
