RE: UMD in negotiations with B1G
Possible additions
UConn
academic equal(63-58), no lacrosse or wrestling and adds hockey & tennis, around equal athletics, & close to BC & Co.

Navy
academically worse(#14 Liberal Arts vs. #58 National University), loses nothing adds tennis, worse athletically, & ND's buddy.

Louisville
academically worse(168-58), loses lacrosse & wrestling, gains tennis, better athletically, & no where near other non-ND ACC schools.

Rutgers
academically equal (68-58), loses nothing adds tennis..., equal or worse athletics, & it's in NJ.
Pick your poison.

Hate to say it but UConn makes sense to add to help keep a share of NYC...but Louisville is the better Football program.

I don't see why you wouldn't add both...maybe get ND to sign up in the process as well.

Academics aside... if MD can get around a 50 million buyout then why can't WVU get out of a GOR?

No, No and No. The only way to take Navy is if ND wants them while joining as a full member.

I say long term if Maryland and Rutgers to Big 10, ACC should pick up Louisville, Cincinnati and UConn as ACC Football would increase in strength and the Basketball would be through the roof. 16 solid Athletic programs. This is after all, about Sports first on these boards anyway. and these three schools would be the best available under a Big East breakup should this go forward in relation to the ACC region. If the ACC won't, the Big 12 probably will grab them. Monday could be very interesting.

That's essentially adding two non-football teams.

Louisville & WVU makes the most sense for #14. No one else is acceptable. Adding UConn and dumb ass schools like St. Johns & Georgetown = FSU and Clemson finding the next door out of the league.

WVU would never leave the BIG 12

If we were to listen to the propoganda the past 13 months we already had NYC since we added "NY's college team"

Besides, the last time we expanded for TV markets it was a total failure. This time add a team that has actually shown a pulse in the past decade.

This Maryland move is not very surprising as I suspected if the B1G wanted to expand, Maryland was an obvious target. What troubles me is that along with Maryland, FSU was against the $50M exit fee and makes me a bit nervous about what they may be planning.

Does this mean that Navy comes aboard, thereby making it easy for ND to join as a full member? Lots of folks are talking UConn, but I'm not buying it.

S*** just got real...

(11-17-2012 07:17 PM)orangefan Wrote:  How about Uconn all sports and Georgetown all sports but football

When I suggested that the ACC should add Navy fb and Gworgetown basketball/olympic sports on the condition that ND join as a full member, I was laughed off the board. And, amongst other things, I was told that the ACC would never take partial members. Then, within a week, ND joined as a partial member.

I honestly couldn't care less about UMD in and of itself. I care about the B1G adding RU. That would screw the ACC for so many reaons. Fortunately, I doubt that the B1G would add RU without first adding UMD. With that in mind, the ACC should work to prevent UMD from leaving. They don't have to match the B1G's offer. They merely have to get close enough to make the ACC's buyout too much of a pain for UMD to justify leaving. I would offer to add BYU football (on the condition that if and when ND decides to join, BYU has to hit the road), and UL in all sports. That would make the ACC way more marketable and would allow for new negotiations with ESPN. I would also talk to ND, and show them how it is in their best interest to keep the ACC strong, and try to get an extra game or two out of them a year (even if that means playing traditional rivals, like Miami, BC, and Pitt on a yearly basis, and then playing a 4 game rotation of everyone else). Finally, I would then remind ESPN that not only has the ACC brand increased in value, but it is in their interest to keep UMD in the ACC, bc ESPN owns 100% of the rights to the ACC, but they only own a fraction of the B1G's rights. Also, I would remind ESPN that sending RU to the B1G would screw a number of other ACC schools, thereby adversely affecting ESPN's investment in the conference. Given that these moves would completely screw the BIG EAST over, because the BE would lose any hope of BYU, and UL as a member, ESPN may be in a jovial mood, and willing to listen.
