They aren't yet. But I'd be surprised if they aren't one by the end of the decade.

The AAU is getting smaller, not larger.

Its decreased by what 3 members? (3 including Cuse voluntarily left, Nebraska was booted but Georgia Tech was added. If I'm not mistaken anyway.) I'd say the definition of what kinds of schools can be a member has changed. UConn is pretty close to those definitions now.

AAU is still pretty important to the B1G, Nebraska lost their AAU status after joining.

As the AAU becomes more of a source of prestige, member schools will be more and more hesitant to expand membership.

Just too add, there is 4 AAU schools that would be ahead of UConn on the B1G list, that would include Virginia, UNC, Kansas, and Mizzou, those would most likely be the 4 they'd have at the top of the choices.

Funny...those are exactly the programs I have listed on my two scenarios for Big Ten expansion.

Eastern will be UVA, UNC and if the ACC is closed up by ESPN and/or Notre Dame then the targets become Missouri and Kansas.

Either choice is pretty good for the conference.

RE: B1Gger Expansion
Buffalo meets your requirements for they are a AAU school in a connecting state that is NOT currently amongst the BigTen, and should have some what of a supportive TV market.

The other school I would take would be Missouri that you passed on for Nebraska. If you are wanting to feed your network then there is a population of 6million plus there sitting basically in your backyard. Also I think the exceed your requirements hands down.

I don't think Buffalo would work well for the B1G, they don't give us much other than another good sized market. Mizzou will most likely only come if we get Kansas so the B1G has to hope and pray that GoR doesn't last.

Only took a few years but the realignment board finally brought up this conversation, thought I'd search for it as a reminder. Man has this board come a long way, still has a ways to go though.

UConn and Virginia Tech will be in 10 years. I think. Maybe.

As for UNC and Virginia... Does money eventually win? Otherwise, how does anyone get them out of the ACC (with that GoR thingy and all).

Not at all ironically, Rutgers has since joined, it just took another 20 years.

I don't think the B1G necessarily has to add ANYONE in a rush....they're about to make a ton of money with the upcoming TV contract deal.

Many people think Kansas and Oklahoma might be headed to the B1G, but I have doubts about how much they would actually add....

UConn doesn't really add anything....

Virginia and North Carolina obviously add a lot, possibly along with GIT and someone

Rice would be a good addition if Oklahoma came aboard

The PAC 12 Cali schools would be good fits

I don't get all the Rice love. Academically they are strong...but that is about it. What are they in Texas as far as fan base goes? 8th? Maybe? No chance of Rice to the B1G in any lifetime. UVA and UNC are obvious YES! additions...but I just don't think they are a possibility. I think Maryland was a one-off because they (relatively) aren't tied to anyone else, stand alone school in the state, DC area, etc.

I understand if kansas gets a B1G invite. AAU, Basketball.

But I still have a hard time believing OU gets an invite without AAU status.

RE: B1Gger Expansion
I could see them getting an associate membership (in some lesser sport) with the hope of bringing them on board as a full member if another Texas school is already on board. It's a long way there, but with Johns Hopkins on board as an associate perhaps there would be similar interest.

Rice is historically one of the greatest schools in college football history, and doing a great job improving their current status. Alongside their elite academics, they have a strong relationship with NASA, have elite baseball, and are located in Houston. That means the BTN gets full penetration into the most populous DMA in Texas and probably could potentially extend cable carriage to Austin, San Antonio and maybe New Orleans.

Oklahoma will get an invite easily without AAU. They are a "franchise player" in college football.

I've been off the grid for a couple of days while on vacation. Suddenly all this talk about further expansion. What the hell did I miss?

this thread was bumped (OP is from 2012)

Oklahoma's been making several public statements hinting at wanting to leave for the B1G.
