Could of, would of, should of

Whenever Sewanee is mentioned, I always feel compelled to refer to my favorite non-Memphis team of all time......

5 wins on the road in 6 days against Texas, Texas A&M, Tulane, LSU, and Ole Miss. The only points scored against them were by a John Heisman (The Heisman Trophy guy) coached Auburn.

Sewanee's Iron Men of 1899

Quote: Described by some football analysts as one of the best teams ever, the undefeated 1899 Sewanee football team is accorded that lofty ranking, not just for its 12-0 record, but for its mid-season train ride into history.
A remarkable five wins in six days — all on the road and all by shutouts against Southern powers — has placed this Sewanee team in an elite class.

Preceding football legends such as the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame of the 1920s, Fordham’s Seven Rocks of Granite of the 1930s and LSU’s Chinese Bandits of the late 1950s, the Iron Men have written their own place in gridiron history. The men of Sewanee proudly carried the school’s banner that fall and the “S’’ on their purple jerseys was as familiar to opponents from North Carolina to Texas as Superman would be in the mythical city of Metropolis a half century later.

But far from comic book super heroes, the “Iron Men” of Sewanee posted some legendary wins against those Southern opponents that fall.

The Legendary Feat Recognized
In Southern Fried Football: The History, Passion and Glory of the Great Southern Game, author and Atlanta Journal-Constitution sports writer Tony Barnhart wrote, “The Tigers from Tennessee’s Sewanee went 12-0 in 1899, but that’s not why this team is No. 1 on his all-time Southern list. Sewanee took the ultimate road trip, playing five games in six days, all on the road. And not only did the Tigers win them all, but all five games were by shutouts.”

The book is published by Triumph in Chicago.

ESPN — On College Gameday Nov. 13, 1999, ESPN featured the University of the South with a four-minute segment on the 1899 football team. Tony Barnhart and ESPN producer Dan Goldfarb spent two days in Sewanee and Cowan taping the segment, which aired on ESPN’s national college football pre-game show. The segment showed campus shots, interviews with descendants of the 1899 team members, current University of Pittsburgh assistant athletic director Johnny Majors and Sewanee head coach John Windham. Thanks to CSX Railroad, a short train ride in Cowan provided a re-enactment of an early leg of the Sewanee to Texas train ride.

The Tally

1899: Sewanee 12-0

Oct. 21 Sewanee 12 @Georgia 0
Oct. 23 Sewanee 32 @Georgia Tech 0
Oct. 28 Sewanee 46 Tennessee 0
Nov. 3 Sewanee 54 Southwestern 0
Nov. 9 Sewanee 12 @Texas 0
Nov. 10 Sewanee 10 @Texas A&M 0
Nov. 11 Sewanee 23 @Tulane 0
Nov. 13 Sewanee 34 @LSU 0
Nov. 14 Sewanee 12 @Ole Miss 0

Nov. 20 Sewanee 71 Cumberland 0
Nov. 30 Sewanee 11 @Auburn 10
Dec. 2 Sewanee 5 @North Carolina 0

Tulane would have done very well financially if it had stayed in the SEC, and it's not out of the realm of possibilty that the Green Wave 1998 team could have been playing for a national championship.

I hate ESPN, but this should be the focus of a 30 for 30 (or if that's not allowed because of conflict with the name ESPN Films) special

I remember as late as the 80s when the LSU-Tulane football game was a real rivalry with fans from all over the state and the media going at it like cats and dogs. And it wasn't just LSU fans who packed Death Valley or the Superdome either. Plenty of Tulane fans as well with long, long caravans heading up I-10 to Baton Rouge for the games.

The Tulane-LSU Football game in 1987 was a classic.

If Tulane had stayed in the SEC?

I think we'd be something between Vanderbilt and Ole Miss/Miss. State athletically. That is, we'd be a second division Football school that would have it moments of success in Football. TU Basketball would probably be very good to strong since it's easier to build a quality program via the SEC and Tulane has had an extended period of being good to very good. Tulane's baseball program would probably be very strong and consistently good, maybe even winning a CWS. TU Women's BBall would probably be like the men's team with an extended period of success and in their case, a niche following.

Tulane would figure to have stayed in the Superdome. There would be no talk of on-campus stadiums. Tulane home games would be a favored trip for SEC schools. Tulane would no doubt have to build an on-campus Basketball arena to accommodate SEC Basketball. It would figure to be a Carmeron Indoor stadium-like arena. One of the toughest places to play in the SEC. This would help the program's BBall fortunes to rise. TU Football would probably experience moments of greatness. We've had three successful coaches who left instead of sticking around. Had Larry Smith, Mack Brown or Tommy Bowden decided to stay at Tulane and build a powerhouse, Tulane would be a formidable program for a stretch of time. There's no telling how much carryover from that would have on the program in the SEC. More likely in the ultra-competitive SEC Tulane could be good for a time then fall to .500 or below.

Tulane in the SEC would have created a couple expansion scenarios that would have effected C-USA. The SEC expansion in the early 90's would have probably featured only one school. Either Arkansas or South Carolina would have been added. If it were Arkansas, they's join the SEC West, leaving USC to join the ACC. Without TU in C-USA the league probably would have added La. Tech. The second round of SEC expansion would have added So. Carolina and Texas A&M.
Had South Carolina been added to the SEC, Arkansas would have gone to the Big XII. The Big XII probably would not have added Baylor, leaving them to join C-USA. Again with La. Tech added to the league, C-USA would have had Baylor and Tech in the league until the next round of SEC expansion would add Arkansas and Texas A&M.

I remimbeer listening to wwl years ago and some guy who was well versed in the history of that series would tell stories on everything from how each school divided the mardi gras colors to "the rag".
He was very facinating.

Sometime in the mid 80's a friend and i were playing golf at the old usm van hook course (warmly known as he goat ranch). Van hook was busy that day as it normally was, and we were pared with 2 older gentleman who were on vacation. They drove to Wisconsin ad back playing a different golf course each day.
It was their final day of the trip and about the 4th whole we discovered one was a greenie and one was a tiger. We laughed at them the last 14 holes, never saw back and forth ribbing likethose two.

The best line i think was from the greenie, he looked at both us and said lemme told yall somting about our schools, "we got people who flunked out of Tulane TEACHING AT LSU" Only time i ever pissed myself on the golf couse

Up above the Mississippi,
Standin' in plain view,
Stands an old abandoned outhouse,
Known as L S U,
Oh the smell,
Oh the smell,
What a terrible smell!
BEFORE I'D GO TO LSU I'D RATHER GO TO HELL!

GO TO HELL LSU! GO TO HELL!

It's a hell-uv-a life at old Tulane
They work you hard as hell.
You work and you work and you work and you work
And they flunk you out as well.
To hell with all the teachers
To hell with school work too.
For if you flunk out at Old Tulane,
You can teach at L S U.

Drink, drink, drink, drink
Drink, drink, drink, drink,
Drink... to Ole, Tu - lane.
Gather 'round, gather 'round,
Drink it down, drink it down.
Drink a cup and sing a song of cheer,
Raise your glasses high,
And drink them dry.
Drink, be merry while the gang's all here.
And we'll drink, drink, drink, drink,
A toast, to the team.
Fighting for the Olive and the Blue.
Scream and yell, LIKE HELL,
And the game will tell,
The victory of Tulane U.

Maybe Tulane can someday get back to the SEC and the Big East is the first stepping stone.
