CUSA wanted to kick Louisville out of the conference because of their academics.
Excerpt
Academics? Louisville was the subject of a "60 Minutes" piece earlier in the decade on its abysmal basketball graduation rate.
Things were so bad that even Louisville's mid-major brethren were appalled. Conference USA schools were actively seeking to boot the Cardinals from the league, citing all the above problems plus the difficulty in getting Louisville to work cooperatively with the rest of the membership. It took an intervention from C-USA commissioner Mike Slive to stop the eviction.

UofL came within one from being booted out, when they filed a restraining order against C-USA. To stop the confrence from expanding and adding ECU and Army. Heck UofL stop ECU from being a founding member. They also killed the Metro Confrence, we were set to join and from a all sports confrence with South Carolina, Cuse, WVU, Memphis, USM, Tulane, UofL, ECU, Cinny, VT, Miami and others. But, UofL didn't want to share NCAA basketball credits ( $$$).

It was several issues. I just pointed out the academic part. Read the article.
Louisville had a poisonous, destabilizing influence on the Metro Conference and on Conference USA. Much as I resent their "promotion" to the ACC, I have to admit that is preferable to being in the same league with them again.

So essentially, they are an Eastern version of Texas- the quintiessential conference killer.

To be fair, Tulane was not added until it was clear Louisville would be gone.
