That upcoming television contract must be outstanding if the basketball schools A.D.'s and Presidents are meeting to discuss breaking off.

Welp. The non-FB schools have until July 1 with a 7-3 majority (or 7-4 if Temple has full voting rights), which is enough to dissolve the conference, but not enough to expel members. Dissolving the conference is a losing proposition for them. They would lose out on millions in NCAA tournament credits and exit fees and without football they would not get anywhere close to as good a TV deal. I think this might just be a bluff to make sure they get as much fromt he TV deal as possible.

This is a blessing in disguise- if they bail and the fb only schools become full members- BYU/AFA could reconsider- Fresno, UNLV, & New Mexico would definitely join. This is the best thing for the new Big East Schools.

So they with the majority are the ones calling the shots on the new additions and at the same time trying to exit?

Nice, kind of explains the additions and the lack of a western addition.

As a school that was looking forward to be in the "in" crowd. This is how I feel the past few rounds of realignment.

As BECB blogger Mark Ennis put it:

Big East catholic schools met privately to discuss ways to have even less money.

RE: BE Catholics held meeting to discuss Breakaway
Honestly...This looks to be what is going to eventually happen anyway. Get it out of the way now so the conference can expand and get stabilized into an all sports format. We all pretty much could see this coming.

I wish them all well and understand they are looking out for their own best interests. They probably can broker a merger with the A10 and decent TV contract. Everyone agrees that the hybrid format is not an ideal way to run things. Personally...I believe in the long run..this would be a good thing.

The question for these schools is going to be MONEY. Can they get a TV deal that is better than their cut of the nBE deal? I guess time will tell.

Exactly. Call their bluff. Where are they going - leaving millions in exit fees, tourney credits they didn't earn particularly for the schools that haven't done much lately - I think they overestimate their value

Had they left a long time ago most of the original football schools would still be around. It would have been a football oriented conference with the member schools all with the same goals & interest.

I doubt the TV money will better but the school might be happier. It also would allow the best of the what was left in the Big East to merge with the best of C-USA and the Mountain West plus Navy, BYU, or Army if needed.

There are some advantages to creating a national all sports conference but at the end of the day I think everybody rides it out until the next wave hits. Providence is better off playing UConn and Marquette is better off playing Cincinnati.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I did not however think about this in regard to AFA and BYU. You might have a good point.01-ncaabbs At that point...I think a name change might be in order.03-idea Any ideas?
