Even if they hang together, and they may not, it won't be called 'Big East football' if the basketball schools vote to leave.

I think a merger with the A10 is more likely.

If by merger you mean raid the A10 of the valuable properties and ditch the ones they don't want to associate with then sure. They are not going to just full merger with the A10.

It really is a heck of deal when part of a conference really doesn't care about the other part and everyone knows it. Basketball only schools don't want to share the basketball money and the football schools want it all together to make more money. Money, money, money........aren't college sports great!!!!

Lets Be Real.........BE basketball goes NOT have the votes to dissolve BE..................individual schools can leave but will pay $$$$$ the price. Every member now needs to think what it can do to join as one and stop all of this idea of doing away with BE Conference

I think so also. To merge into the A10 means giving up the "Big East" name and those basketball credits (money). I think they'll take bthe best of the A10 and add those schools to the 7 Big East basketball schools to form the new Big East basketball conference.

This isn't "dissolving" the conference, it's taking the Big East brand and turning it into an all basketball conference, which, it seems, they may have the right to do.

ESPN is now discussing a 21 team A-10 for next season, which is chock full of basketball schools. At that point the A-10 would become the negotiator, probably get MSG and a nice TV deal for basketball leaving a very interesting situation for Houston, SMU, etc...
Brace yourselves ladies and gentlemen, for the butthurt from some will be like never before.

There is an article on espn that says if the basketball teams leave as a group there is no exit fee. This was written in back when the 1st round of realignment happened.

IF that happens. The remaining "members" can form a new conference if it has 5 previous members right?

Give the WAC a couple of bucks and you have a name and tourney autobids, right? 03-razz

They BB schools need a 3/4 majority to dissolve and reform without the FB schools. They are one short unless:
A) Temple agrees (very unlikely)
B) UConn or Cincy leave (much more likely)

At that point they can dissolve the conference membership, reform under the Big East name, keep the autobid and tourney revenue, and probably pick off what they want from the A10.

The new BE probably gets as much or more TV revenue, and doesn't have to worry about RPI.

The NCAA has already said it won't hand out any autobids to new conferences.

Who could those five schools pull that would give them a new valuable TV contract?

They would probably be in a conference with comparable TV money to the other non power conferences, and have non autobid.

Makes more sense to join one of the existing conferences.

But what league would they join? C-USA isn't going to 20+ teams (at least I don't think they would) and they are not going to revoke invitations (at least I don't think they could).

There were rumors a while back about a 20, 24 and even a 32 team league.

C*USA can kill the Big East.

If C*USA agrees to take Temple as Football-Only, we have a two-prong "F*** You" to the Big East by convincing them to vote to dissolve the Big East:
1. For kicking Temple out years ago.
2. For destroying C*USA

Temple goes to the Atlantic-21/22/23/24, they end up with a nice A-10 contract, and football remains in C*USA getting decent money, and very likely playing some of the same football schools that are now trying to cobble together the Big East.

Fine by me. I just want ECU in an all sports league with the strongest group of gang of 5 members left. There is no "next level" for anyone to reach, but if I had my way at this point I'd like ECU in a league with UCF, USF, Marshall, USM, and as many of the other original and 2.0 C-USA members possible. That will likely be the end result of all this in the not too distant future.
