BIG EAST READY TO RESPOND:

Having absorbed a direct hit by losing the Catholic 7 group of schools over the weekend, Big East commissioner Mike Aresco is about to go into a battle mode with a series of moves designed to not only reinvigorate his embattled league, but also put it in position to emerge as a viable 6th conference that could sit at the table with the five so called Super Conferences–the Big 12, Big 10, ACC, Pac-12, and SEC.
According to sources in the Big East, Arseco and company are planning on exploring the following moves.
1. Sell the name “”Big East”" to the basketball schools after getting some assurances from the NCAA that the cost of losing the Big East name will not cost them too much in the lucrative NCAA basketball tournament. If the name is sold to the new Big East, the old Big East will petition the NCAA to get a 32nd guaranteed spot for its champion.
Aresco’s contention is that a basketball league with Connecticut, Cincinnati, Memphis and Temple has a decent foundation to build.
2. Give East Carolina full membership (the original deal was football only) which would give the new league an Eastern group of Cincinnati, UConn, South Florida, Temple, East Carolina, Central Florida, Tulane and in 2015 Navy.
Form a western group which would include Memphis, Houston, SMU, Boise State, San Diego State and either Air Force, BYU, Nevada or Fresno. The capacity to expand to as many as 16 teams remains on the board, although the plan now is go into increments as teams change, going from 12 teams next season to 14, 15 or 16 teams in the following seasons.
In basketball, the all sports group would be all of the schools in the Eastern Group other than Navy, as well as Memphis, SMU, and Houston. That would be a 10 team league which could work perfectly in terms of scheduling. But additional teams (UMass) could be considered.
Aresco’s plan is keep the Big East together as it now stands for one more season in football and basketball, which would be a bridge year between new television contracts involving old and new teams.
The 7 Catholic schools have expressed a desire to leave as early as next season, but the most likely compromise that will be worked out is to give the Catholic schools the name Big East, collect a minimal exit fee which would then allow both leagues to begin operation on July 1, 2014, with new identities and focuses.
“Everyone is trying to make this as amicable a separation as possible,” said one Big East source familiar with the discussions “The Catholic schools were uncomfortable with the way the wind was blowing with more changes that seem to be coming and everyone understands that. It was just time to move.”
The moves the Big East and the Catholic schools make will come in increments, with a series of announcements and decisions being made over the next several weeks.
East Carolina being granted a full membership will be one of the first steps. The Big East naming issue will be the next move. Aresco’s league might come up with a hybrid name such as Conference America, which more truly captures the wide geographical and television footprint it wants to create.
Aresco wants to move quickly and decisively on these moves to assure such incoming conference members such as Boise State and San Diego State that the future with a new conference is a risk worth taking.
All of these moves are predicated on not having any snares over legal technicalities, but the overall intent is to get things moving as quickly as possible to allow both groups to focus on the future rather than the past.

I think they mean Navada-Las Vegas. No way in hell would Navada U get the call over a highly popular UNLV program. Not even for football.

Interesting that if this is correct, Aresco is going to give this his best shot and is at the very least talking in terms of being on par with the Big 5. This might be a stretch but at least their is a plan.

Does this mean an all sports league or not? Confused on the wording.

Btw, if the conference is named Conference America" then does that mean CUSA has to find a new name?

BSU views Nevada a regional rival. If they surpass UNLV, it is because BSU would prefer them over UNLV. JMO.

I'm confused on a lot of that. I just think Aresco should stick to TV because he has no clue as to run a sports athletic conference.

Just consider it a layover until the ACC gets raided which could be anytime now.

If we have no plans to go all sports in the west then we are likley done. The numbers just dont work.

We are looking at 5-6 million a team at best for all-sports. Football onlys maybe getting 3-3.5. Boise has to pay exit fees to the MW, and entry fees to the BE. Then they also get to entry fees to the Big West and yearly travel subsidies totaling around 900K to the Big West schools. Im not seeing them contining if all we may be doing is adding one more football only. Which means any real chance of being the number 6 conference is done.

For free I'll give Aresco the rights to a perfect name for the new conference--"Conference-U Wont Stay". Unless we want that to be our moniker, we need to go all sports and add 3 western teams. UNLV, New Mexico and Fresno. BYU and Air Force are not coming.

It would be super weird to see Memphis in a diff division from Cincy and UConn. Those bball games will make the conference. Put Tulane in the west and call it a day.

I'm a bit disappointed we're not going for east and west allsports. Looks like we're going to be big and nationwide for FB, and just eastern for BB.... Too bad, as I think the most STABILITY comes with bringing on everyone for allsports. Might work though, if all the Western FB schools get an olympic home together...

I wonder what our new name will be?????

True enough. Ship Tulane to the West in the interim though.

I don't think that is a misprint. The loss of the C7 has caused this board to knee jerk reaction thinking that we need to bolster basketball by adding the likes of UNLV and New Mexico. Both are toxic in football and would be foolish moves.

The article also confirms my feelings that a national all sport conference just isn't possible.

We will soon become all sports. It may take a couple of years but it will happen. We will add at least 1 more West school for 2014. The pieces are all there, It is simply putting the puzzle together.

The divisions will only be for football. Basketball will have 10 members with no divisions, which I like. That at least means 2 games each against UConn, UC, and Temple.

Memphis
Cincinnati
Connecticut
Temple
South Florida
Houston
SMU
East Carolina
Central Florida
Tulane

Also, 8 of the 10 members are former CUSA affiliates. I guess Conference America is appropriate after all.03-banghead

The BE had 8 allsports members for a long time... What's wrong with 8 in the west and 8 in the east making a 16 team allsports conference? Basically two mini conferences that share scheduling and a CCG? I thought it could work...
