Football Players I wish I could have met
I grew up with Walter Payton in Columbia Ms. and went to school with him. He was a friend and a someone I enjoyed our friendship in our young years and high school. I also knew Reggie Collier, Louis Lipps, Sammy Winder and others that played on 82 Southern Miss team while I was a student there that I had classes with or would know from Vann Hall. I also could have met other Southern Miss players that were there before or after me that I didn't and I wish now I had. Among them Ray Guy, Brett Favre, and those not USM related but close enough I could have like Drew Brees, Archie Manning and so on.

I was thinking about who I didn't meet that I wish I had and I guess my number one selection would be Drew Brees since I not only admire his skills, but what a class act he is.

Just for fun, who would be your number one choice and why?

Number 1? Ronnie Lott. Loved to see him play w/ such intensity. Favorite player of all time.

Number 2? I'm going to say RGIII. He seems all class, even to a Wash Redskin hater.

Number 3? Walter White. Grew up in my hometown, a year or two ahead of me. Never met him, but also only heard great things about him.

I love Marcus Allen too, but not sure I'd say he was all class, he has some questionable associates.

The first one that immediately springs to mind is Darrell Green. Played his entire career with Washington, and he was - and still is - a class act.

Guys like Red Grange and Jim Thorpe, so I could get a read on whether or not they could play today's game.

RE: Football Players I wish I could have met
I grew up with Dennis Harrah, a former Rams offensive lineman, back when they were still in LA. But he graduated from Stonewall Jackson HS in Charleston, WV. I've met several NFL players, mainly due to my father. But IMO the person I met that stuck in my mind the most was Terry Bradshaw. He's an easy going person and has such a great sense of humor that he's a blast to be around...

I think my father's favorite football player was Sam Huff. But that could be because he arranged for my father to stay at the Hawai'i Marriott at Diamond Head, when it was new. Mom and Dad stayed in a suite that cost about $1000 per night, and his reservation only charged him $45 per night. When he checked in the girl behind the counter looked at his reservation, her jaw dropped. She then said, "who the hell do you know?" She's probably still wondering, because he didn't tell her...

His favorite sports figure was Sam Snead, who he called an SOB on their first meeting, because Snead was going to ignore him. He was still a cub reporter, and Snead tended to be stand offish to the press. Oddly enough, my father calling Snead an SOB actually worked. He got his interview, and they became good friends afterward.

I remember a story Snead used to tell about a exhibition match he played at the Greenbrier with some PGA golfers. Snead was paired up with a long knocker (I forget who), and they got to #17 on the Old White course. There was a line of trees in the fairway, and the long knocker was going to lay up. Snead said, "I thought you were a long ball hitter. When I was your age, I used to hit the ball over those trees."

So the guy lined up his shot and knocked it smack into the trees. The guy looked at Snead and said, "I though you said you could hit the ball over those trees."

It was at that point that Snead said, "Well, when I was your age, those trees were only about so high" (holding his hand around his waist)...

Everyone in the audience got a good laugh out of that one...
