Will Michigan's attendance streak go down this Saturday?
On October 25th, 1975, the Michigan Wolverines beat the Indiana Hoosiers 55-7 with 93,857 in attendance. It hasn't gone under six figures in the 14,197 days since.

Yet, that streak is in serious jeopardy this year with a very underwhelming home schedule (App. State, Miami, Utah, Minnesota, Penn State, IU, Maryland) and a big loss to Notre Dame fresh in the memory. A lot of this was detailed in a Yahoo Sports article that reported that student sales have gone from from 21,000 to as low as 13,000 (in the time between 2012 and now) with no wait list to speak of for season tickets.

My Miami Redhawks have lost 18 games in a row, almost sure to become 19. There's no reason for a Wolverine fan to get excited about this game, and I wonder if this is the one that finally dips into the 90's since that game against IU nearly 40 years ago. What do you think?

But I thought there was nothing else to do in BIG 10 towns?

Gotta love those passionate CFB fan bases. Every fan base is fair-weather or has fair-weather fans.

There's a lot you can do in Ann Arbor... as well as Columbus (not sure if safe), East Lansing, Madison, and Minneapolis...

Are you kidding? Walmart Wolverines will show up in full force as they always do.

Yeah I figured, but it's kinda true for the schools cities/towns I didn't mention...

I stopped reading right there. I am absolutely no fan of Michigan football at all, but it is simply astonishing that they have had at least 100,000 fans attend every one of their home games since 1975.

That has to be one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of American sports.

Ann Arbor is not all that far from Detroit and the surrounding suburbs.

I'd dare to say there is more to do in Ann Arbor (outside of casino's) than there is in Detroit.

It's been speculated for a year on the Michigan board that the attendance mark could go down this weekend if Michigan lost to Notre Dame.

That said, I don't think it will go down this weekend. Classes didn't begin until 9/2, so this will be the first home game for many students.

Wait for another bad loss combined with bad weather.

If the only problem Michigan has is that they can "only" get 98,000 fans to the stadium vs. a team that has not won a game since 2012, then they have less worries than I thought.

Except in SEC country we have likely seen the peak of gameday attendance.

Yes, Ann Arbor is waaaaay nicer than Detroit. In terms of college towns, it's right near the top with Austin and Madison for breadth of activities.

There are die-hard fans that will attend no matter who they're playing.

Rich Rod ruined the team and Hoke needs to get them back to playing Michigan football if they ever hope to be relevant again.

They will offer tickets at a much reduced price to UofM employees for unsold tickets.

RE: Will Michigan's attendance streak go down this Saturday?
The Detroit News reporting on the streak possibly ending:

Quote:As of Wednesday, StubHub had end-zone tickets going for as low as $22, about a $10 drop since last Sunday. There is a ticket-package deal offered this week on Amazon Local, similar to those that appeared on Groupon and Living Social before the season opener against Appalachian State, that includes one ticket, a hot dog, T-shirt, beverage and program for $65, a $109 value.

And tickets are plentiful on MGoBlue.com. As of Wednesday, there was a limit of 99 tickets for the game. An attempt to purchase that number was successful, with end zone seats available in Section 15 over eight rows.

http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20140...ger-ending

To be clear, I'm not suggesting that the Michigan program is going to fall off a cliff and become Purdue in a few seasons. But between the weather forecast (60's plus rain), an uninteresting opponent in a season with many unappealing matchups, and a somewhat alienated fan base (as detailed in the OP article), I see the perfect storm for the numbers to fall south of six digits for this game. If it doesn't happen now, it would take a few Rich Rod-like seasons in a row for them to come even close.

More likely than not however, the streak will remain. However, the fact that it could be close to breaking is a microcosm of the way college football is run today.

They call THAT an underwhelming home schedule? If they don't like it then maybe Wolverine fans would be willing to trade schedules with the Bearcats?

For their standards I suppose. No OSU, no Michigan State, no Notre Dame, and no Wisconsin on there.

The streak remains intact, looked like there was some beautiful fall weather in Ann Arbor. Final score 34-10 scUM.
