Linky

Yikes. Y'all better hope that's just a starting point and not a take-it-or-leave-it.

if so, the nBE is dead. The CUSA pays out approximately that and the travel is MUCH easier for Tulane, ECU, UH and SMU

Um, I don't think the travel is easier for ECU. It's very close, but not quite.

I think it actually is easier for ECU. esp if go to divisional format in 2015 where then don't have to go to Texas much.

NBC Sports Network offers Big East $20M-$23M/year for media rights, sources tell @ESPN

Q: If McBullshit has an actual source 'in the know', than why is there a range (20-23) instead of an actual number that was offered?

A: Because its merely a guess, and isn't based on any actual offer that was leaked.

Besides that, there is no context as to which part of the package that supposed range is attached. Everyone knows we're splitting our inventory between multiple networks.

Depends if that is per team or total. Also could be for 2013-14, but not likely. Either way, number seems irrational.

Someone needs to tweet and ask him to clarify.

If NBC made an offer to the nBE... why on earth would anyone leak that to @ESPN????

This smells a lot like the old gamesmanship of trying to devalue the nBE in the midst of all the negotiations. Plain old business. ESPN has been doing this to us for awhile now...

The largest combined market footprint in college football is only worth 23 mill per year? Bullsh!t. That's barely any more than the Mountain West.

RE: nBE only worth $23m per year?
travel for secondary sports would be WAY easier for everyone else..

Not easier for ECU as football only maybe, but way easier for a 20 man Tulane baseball roster or women's softball...

Quote:NBC Sports Network verbally offered the Big East between $20 million to $23 million a year for six years to acquire the league's media rights, sources told ESPN.

Meanwhile the Big East's Catholic 7 schools are closing on a deal with Fox Sports according to sources.

NBC Sports Network is expected to submit an official offer to the Big East by next week. Once the Big East receives an official offer from NBC Sports Network, the league must give ESPN, the Big East's current rights holder, the opportunity to match the deal.

The Catholic 7 schools -- DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall and Villanova -- haven't formed a new league yet, but Fox Sports has been the leader for their media rights after approaching the schools before they had even left the Big East, sources said. Fox Sports' offer would be worth $30 million to $40 million a year depending on how many teams are in the league, sources said.

Quote:Before ESPN's exclusivity window to renew the Big East's rights expired in November, the Big East sought a $300 million a year deal from ESPN, which would have been the largest in college athletics. However, the network declined, a source said, putting the Big East's media rights on the open market.

Since the exclusivity window expired, NBC Sports Network has been the most aggressive in negotiations with the Big East.

Just two years ago, the Big East turned down a nine-year deal from ESPN worth $1.17 billion, an average of $130 million annually. Since then the bottom has fallen out for the league, which has had 16 schools announce they were leaving in that time.

In April of 2011, former Big East commissioner John Marinatto recommended the Big East accept ESPN's nine-year, $1.17 billion deal, but the league's presidents voted to turn it down. That deal would have earned full members $13.8 million a year and non-football members $2.43 million a year.

By comparison, NBC Sports Network's $20 million to $23 million offer would earn each Big East member about $2 million annually, depending if the league has 11 or 12 members. Navy is scheduled to join in 2015 as its 11th member.

The Big East's current six-year media rights deal is worth $3.12 million annually for each of the eight full members and $1.5 million annually for each of the remaining non-football members. The eight football members split $13 million; the 15 basketball members split $24 million.

It was supposed to be split up among several media outlets, so maybe this is just part of it and ESPN/someone else gets the rest. That would be my guess.

Why would this not be a legal issue for McMurphy to state this? Both NBC and ESPN are competitors bidding on the same deal. Why would they be able to know or announce this amount?

If the number was anywhere near that low, you can bet Aresco wouldn't sign a long-term deal at such a figure.

Exactly my point above. Unless the BE has publicly released this info, someone 'close' to the situation has a major conflict of interest problem brewing.

Or, ESPN made it up to devalue a product they might not get, and thus hurt a competitor. Business.

I don't want to be an I-Told-You-So, but I told you so.

I forgot to mention college hockey in that post. Since that post, NBCSN has added Formula 1 and English Premier League. The nBE needs NBCSN a lot more than NBCSN needs the nBE.
