RE: OT: Have fun creating your 5 favorite vocalists list...remember it is yours
Vocalists to me implies more than just rock music. It means someone who's voice alone I'd listen to. Can't see listening to Steve Perry a capella, for instance.
I'm nt a very old man, but for just vocalists, I'd have to say (and from my youth):
Frank Sinatra-during his prime,
Karen Carpenter, the absolute smoothest female vocal ever-like glass
Harry Belafonte, kinda rough but singing and songs hold up well sans music
Dean Martin, good ol' Deano had that swagger
and pick one from: Patsy Cline, Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald
Now, for vocalists accompanied by rock-type instrumentation:
Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys because of the great harmonies
Neil Diamond, the only songwriter that consistently can bring a tear to my eye with a song
Bono, he's hit or miss, but his highs are really high when he hits
Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs, who had more character with his raspy voice than most are born with
Suzanna Hoffs from the Bangles, who sends shudders down my spine with her amazing vibrato. (She's still out there touring, just saw her a few months ago and she is amazing, but she's just so petite!)
Country vocalists:
Johnny Cash, the man in black
Roger Miller, King of the Road and Dang Me and a bunch of other very singable tuines that don't need much accompaniment to come across
Shania Twain, hey, I like short brunettes with powerful voices and good songwriting skills
Conway Twitty, could do it all back in his day when I was young
John Denver, just too many great songs he sang that still stick in my mind all these years later, plus every Christmas I still like listening to his Muppets Christmas Together album
