The Atlantic coast conference is spreading its brand into the restaurant business. The ACC American cafe is set t open at Raleigh-Durham International Airport next year, as the conference partners with HMS Host for an upscale restaurant that will offer "farm-to-market" dishes and entrees inspired by the home cities of ACC teams, according to the airport's announcement.

Does this sound like a conference whose core members are thinking of abandoning ship and fleeing to the Big Ten?

In a humorous side not, the article goes on to say:

We're not sure if they're already taking reservations, but we know some folks around here are waiting to hear, "UConn party, your table is ready now."

Whereas the B10 started a network for content distribution in key major markets, the ACC has countered by licensing its name to an eatery at a third-tier (in flight volume) airport. One approach is strategic (increasing revenue and branding by expanding sports content distribution), the other is gimmicky (increasing revenue and branding by moving into the airport food market). In terms of prognosticating conference alignment outcomes, I would not weigh much significance on this development.

One thing is certain – the decision to jump from one major conference to another involves a complex array of variable considerations (I just don’t believe this is one). Unless you’re the administration of UConn or UCincy considering an offer to join the ACC, no such decision is made on the quick. A UNC to B10 type decision would be socialized and vetted among dozens of constituencies over months.

No doubt that this is small potatoes, but that's not the point.

This kind of thing doesn't happen without the approval and consent of the board - even if it's only a minor informational item at a board meeting, i.e. university presidents. They would all be informed of such an initiative.

So, the point is, who initiative such an enterprise - even for small potatoes - on their way out the door? It would only serve to embarrass them in their own backyard. It just doesn't happen.

Who says the ACC has to fold if it loses most of it's current membership? Who says that this isn't a very desperate measure by ACC leadership (Swofford) to create reasons for said schools to not leave?

Swofford: "Hey guys! We are creating a restaurant so that we can pay you equally!"

ACC School President: "So what happens when the Big Ten creates it's own restaurant line?"

Swofford: :muttering:

Swofford doesn't have the authority to do that on his own. He is the commissioner, not the leadership. The leadership is the member institutions themselves.

I love how people constantly think this is Swofford's idea. Swofford's bosses are the university presidents and chancellors. He works under them and for them collectively. Every single one of them. Swofford doesn't just come up with ideas and then put them into action unilaterally or by himself. Swofford may come up with an idea but it is up to the schools to accept or reject them. The SCHOOLS have the FINAL say.

I guess Swofford was the one that signed off on the $50 million exit for all the schools in the conference (save FSU)?

I guess it was Swofford that forged school president signatures (every single ACC school, including FSU) on the documents authorizing the conference to use all legal options available to them to aggressively pursue every penny from Maryland?

I guess this restaurant idea was some great scheme of Swofford's to fend off the B1G and the schools really didn't want it, right? It couldn't possibly be because the ACC schools like the idea and want to brand the ACC conference? *gasp*

There is no way you are an Iowa fan. First, Iowa fans wouldn't be this concerned and obsessed over this ACC thing. Secondly, even if they were interested they wouldn't have such a biased view point.

I'm guessing you are either an Iowa State fan (scared of the B12 falling apart) or a WVU fan (and we know the type). Either way, take a look at what you are saying. It doesn't jive with the evidence at hand or the logic of it.

Wow, you are an idiot AND you can't read. It says Iowa not Iowa State and not West Virginia. Your attempt to try and portray me as such shows just how pathetic you are at having such a discussion.

Do not try to portray me as something I am not worm.

I am going to enjoy finding you here when things start to happen.

An ACC restaurant will embarrass them? Serious? That's funny.

It's in his own backyard, the Raleigh-Durham Airport. A move to the B1G would be controversial in Carolina. The restaurant would be a constant reminder to the public. Of course it would embarrass the president at UNC, Duke, etc.

Obviously they wouldn't care about the restaurant enterprise itself if they were leaving. The point is that it wouldn't make it out of committee if they weren't behind it. The timing would be all wrong and they would know that. To take such a step would be incredibly sloppy management. For them to sign such a contract and then to destroy the brand name that they just sold the rights to would be grounds for a law suit. Why would they put themselves in that position?

LOL

that is all that your post is worth. An embarrassment? They would have chosen to leave that conference and that conference is desperate enough to try a restaurant chain? Oh what an embarrassment! More likely it will be seen as confirmation for a choice well made.

Enjoy your conference restaurant when your team is finally invited.

Here's a simple question: could the ACC be a lot more cohesive than these folks assume? So far, the evidence says yes.

My "antics" prove nothing of the sort that you are trying to represent. The evidence at hand does support me. You can keep repeating otherwise into perpetuity but there is plenty of evidence that realignment is happening and is continuing to happen.

Have fun being an obvious troll.

Yeah, the ability to get a nonbinding Presidential promise instead of a GoR to be used to boost it's network deal definitely should be used as evidence that these schools feel strongly about staying with the ACC for the long term. Some really strong evidence right there!

RE: The ACC American Cafe
I'm really disappointed this thread has not produced better jokes. Come on, folks - it's an airport restaurant run by a crappy food service company. This isn't some major chain that's being launched. If it's like most airport restaurants, it's going to have limited table service and be sandwiched in between a Best Buy vending machine and a newsstand. What kind of glorious menu items are they going to have? Chowdah? BBQ? They'll have crabcakes initially, but they'll soon be off the menu.

If it's truly going to be an ACC experience then the management will only care about being worth a damn from November to March.

Don't waste your time stating the OBVIOUS to those ACC clowns. They don't live in a reasonable world. I already had the same comments on the ACC board about a week ago and they did not go over well.

Swofford doesn't have the authority to do that on his own. He is the commissioner, not the leadership. The leadership is the member institutions themselves.

You come across as incredibly naive. That's sort of like saying the citizens of the U.S. are the leaders of the country and not the President and other elected officials.
