anyway, word is coaches have been told to stop scheduling CUSA teams in ooc in preparation for the move.

I could see:

cusa -14

E- WKU, M Tn St, Marshall, ODU, UNCC, UAB, Smiss
W- UTEP, UTSA, N Tex St, Rice, La tech, FAU, FIU

does it matter if the FL school's are in the east or west? everybody is flying to them anyway + lots of flights between miami-dallas

Coaching staffs are heavily involved with scheduling at most schools.

CUSA East: WKU, MTSU, Marshall, Charlotte, Old Dominion, FIU, FAU

That is a pretty nice East division on paper. A few schools in the CUSA West are getting screwed over though...

CUSA West: UTEP, UTSA, Rice, UNT, La Tech, So Miss, UAB

UAB is definitely getting the shaft here. I guess it doesn't matter though because they have their football program operating at such a low level right now. So Miss not as much and LaTech definitely not.

With this lineup, I'm not very pleased that Marshall has ZERO of its old conference mates in their division. I'd love to find a way to keep UAB East, if for no other reason.

On the upside. Marshall would be able to recruit the holy shiite out of South Florida with this Eastern Division alignment.

At Arkansas State the coaches make all schedules subject to approval of the AD except in football where the AD makes the schedule.

How is UAB getting screwed over? Because they don't have a bunch of startup programs to pad their win total with? The east is horrendous for the time being until those schools get up to speed. There will be several better FCS conferences.

UAB would be away from ODU, Charlotte, and MTSU, three programs they almost certainly advocated adding due to proximity and basketball focus along with WKU another program they would likely advocate for.

Instead they would be in the Texas division with La.Tech and USM. That's a budget buster and not designed to help generate fan interest in Birmingham.

I hope they do push USM west, just so our AD will get off his butt and get us into a real conference.

I think you going west no matter what. Even expanding to 16, to keep UAB east is going to send you west unless the three new teams are from west of the Mississippi River.

I'd honestly almost rather we just go to 16. Throw in two Western members in addition to WKU and keep UAB and USM east.

An east with Marshall, USM, UAB, ODU, Charlotte, the Florida twins, WKU, and MTSU looks about as good as CUSA could realistically get to me. The only problem is that is more mouths to feed so I doubt schools would be willing to advocate adding two more.

I'd say that it does matter. If it goes down like that the biggest recruiting areas that the eastern schools will have games in will be in Norfolk and Charlotte. Meanwhile the west schools get to play in both Texas and Florida at least once a year.

I don't see that happening.

That looks like 9 in the east leaving UTEP, UNT, UTSA, Rice and La Tech needing 4 more to get to 9 in the west. Don't see that happening. If you put USM in the west for 8 in the east, the west would need to add 2 out of Texas St, Ark St, ULL, NMSU for 16 total.

I'm also an advocate of the 16-team model. WKU, Arkansas State and NMSU would help the geography a lot, but Southern Mississippi needs to let it be known where they want to play, east or west.

Enough. We're all in this together, like it or not.

With USM having an interim president, good luck getting a firm answer.

If CUSA could grow to 18 really fast that might be almost enough to put the SBC out of business. WKU in the East and then Ark State, Tx State, ULL in the West.

Then again likely not because an SBC with ULM, USA, Troy and Georgia State could just recruit New Mexico State and Idaho to save the league along with Southern, ASU, JMU, Liberty, Lamar as needed to return to 10.

The SBC has the status as a G5 conference contractually in the new playoff system. A big advantage the WAC never lasted to see.

If we're stuck in CUSA, I'd rather be in the West. At least UTEP, Rice, Louisiana Tech, and to some extent even North Texas are recognizable names to anyone who's followed the game to any extent during my lifetime and don't make everybody go, "Who the hell is that?" when they show up on the schedule.

This isn't at all a commentary on the actual quality of the their programs, but there are just too many IA/FBS newbs and start-ups in the East. Being in a division in which UAB is considered an elder statesman does not appeal to me one bit.
