ECU AD wanted Aresco League teams to be able to make own TV deals
Another item about Aresco League TV negotiations, mined from CBS' public records request:

East Carolina AD to Big East: TV plan could help 'court' BYU, others

Quote:On Dec. 28, a few days before Boise State left the conference and less than two months from the league securing a long-term television deal with ESPN, Holland emailed league presidents and athletic directors about a “very raw” concept that “may have value after being massaged by others.”

. . .

“The above plan would allow us to “court” BYU and possibly other potential conference members,” Holland wrote in the last sentence of the email.

Last week, ESPN matched NBC Sports Network's offer to land the Big East's rights. The deal is worth $130 million over seven years, per ESPN.

Nobody responded. Intriguing concept, except nobody else thought much of it I guess.

If the football schools sell off the name, form a new conference does the deal with ESPN become null?

The last line indicates the Big East is still selling the name to the C-7.

Wasn't that the sort of creative approach to TV rights that Aresco was hired for?

If anyone had listened to ECU a few years ago when they advocated that CUSA go to 16 or 18 games, the league might have had a package together that would have made it easier for people to turn down the Big East because of the mix of lower costs, regional games, and TV rights.

Explain instead of throw your usual crap out there. Holland is a step ahead of most ADs and has as much respect as any AD out there. In 2 years I hope he becomes our new commish & then watch our new conference take off.

Why a 2-year wait?

He promised ECU he'd stay until a new AD settles in before he pursues another athletic endeavor.

it's an interesting thought...
Between-
UConn- Mens/womens basketball
Cincy- football/basketball
Memphis-basketball
Temple-basketball
ECU- football
USF/UCF- Football(could see them pooled together)
Houston/SMU- football(could see them pooled together)

really, only for Tulane would it not make sense I would think.

Throwing out viable ideas ignored by others?

---

Lets face it while in an ideal world everyone in the conference get's the same deal but that's not the world the BE wsa living in.

The mountain West was smart enough to offer Boise some autonomy with their TV rights and the whole conference will benefit.

Still say we need Terry Holland in DC at the highest level.

Tulane doesn't make sense on any level.

oh gosh, I hope not, he just cost his school 9 million dollars to move to the big east, I'd hate to see what he would do with the national debt if given the chance

?Then you are even saying that he would fit right in, kidding. This is something ECU wanted for years, and they will be with schools they played previously. So regardless of one move that at the time seemed to be best, they might have made the same move. There was so much acrimony over how the CUSA was stacked up it will turn out fine for them.

The problem with this is everyone would get a different payout and would lead to a lot of infighting and programs leaving, which is already enough of a problem as is.

actually holland is much responsible for how cusa ended up looking, he also had the advantage of having more info on the move than any of the other ADs who previously made the move. all in all, he doesn't look to swift when it comes to business decisions. If I made a decision where my company made initial start up cost of 9 million for a new product line, for an increase of only 600k a year in revenue, I'd be fired
