UMass emerging as probable #12
Sources I've talked to are telling me that UMass is emerging as a strong contender for the #12 in the America 12 Conference. Sources said if they are invited, they will likely come in with Navy for 2015. Basketball will have no divisions. Football divisions would look like this:

North Division:
Navy
UConn
Temple
UMass
Cincy
ECU

South Divison:
Houston
USF
Tulane
SMU
UCF
Memphis

Lol...we left CUSA west to play in CUSA west and join a conference with UMass. I've seen enough. I'm fine with UMass as a Olympic sports add to balance Navy. They aren't ready for FBS football--much less a move up in weight class.

It depends... Were your "sources" wearing tin-foil hats?

That you did...but this is just a guy (not that I'm calling him or his sources a liar). If we start hearing this from writers and others I think you'd be right, though.

I quit worrying "about" Navy a long time ago. Navy joining this conference realistically dried up when the "All Continent" idea died with Boise State and SDSU.

Don't worry about it, they're not coming. And to be completely honest, I'm not sure they ever really were.

That's the best news I've heard on this forum in long time. While the CUSA does have some decent schools we could add, the downside is it just adds fuel to the fire than this new conference is merely CUSA 2.0. And given that we no longer have the Big East badge to hide behind, I think that would dampen the prospects for rebranding ourselves. But who knows....I'll support whoever if there's a logical reason behind their add.

Does UMASS have a viable plan to expand their stadium and get out of playing in Foxborro? If so then great, if not then I hope they aren't added.

bc adding another MAC powerhouse program is really going to raise the football profile of the league.

I don't have a preference between UMass and TU. I'll take either or both; we're just looking for solid members, not home runs. I'd rather have Southern Miss than either at this point, plus I care more about adding VCU/GMU/WSU to shore up basketball than any particular fb #12, because that situation's already resolved itself in a pretty disappointing fashion.

Given their seemingly decent upside (and their proximity to me, on a selfish note), I'm cool with the Minutemen coming on-board. Ultimately I'm kind of of the opinion that this means Navy's not coming, which... doesn't really bother me that much.

That's true. You make a good argument. But they would make our hoops better, and I stand by the fact that this conference has more potential to be great in hoops than decent in football. If we are starting a new conference with no history to fall back on, it's important that we are good at something than average all around.

Memphis and ECU should be swapped to preserve pre-existing rivalries.

Their contract at Gillette expires in 2016, so they have an out in the not too distant future and I assume they wouldn't be joinnig until 2015 anyway. The far bigger issue is the first part of your question. I don't know the answer to that one.

We actually have more history/rivalries with the north schools

I much prefer east and west divisions because I want to be in a division with UCF and USF as well as Temple and UCONN.

North / South would be a horrible way to split divisions IMO. One division with 2 in TX and 2 in FL is extremelly lop-sided in terms of recruiting.
