I'll be there in a couple of months. Where should I go and what should I order?

Lockhart, TX BBQ
How many places are you wanting to try?
My guide to Lockhart BBQ:
Kreuz Market: Big barn-looking building out on the highway, but used to be located in the middle of town (where Smitty's is now). They took the old pit with them when they moved. Top-notch brisket, excellent sausage (try the JalapeƱo sausage if available and you want a kick). Beef ribs are available on Friday and Saturday and are amazing. Sides are sold at a separate counter, after you have gotten your meat. No sauce (don't ask for any, either).
Smitty's Market - owned by the other half of the family that owns Kreuz Market (there was a big falling out in the family when those in control of Kreuz Market wanted to move to a new building). Kreuz got the pit, but Smitty's has the rest of the history. The two are literally at war with each other. Menu features are basically the same. Everything is good. No sauce (I've been told that they do have sauce and will begrudgingly bring you some if you ask for it, but I've never needed it).
Black's - you'll see the signs throughout town directing you to Black's and that's a good thing, as it is neither on the highway nor in downtown. Good brisket, good sausage. Not a fan of the ribs. Owner is an SMU alum. Unlike Kreuz and Smitty's, Black's has sauce, and I recommend you try it.
Chisholm Trail - on the highway in the south of town. Only thing I have had here is brisket. It's good. But if you're only in town for a meal or two, it shouldn't be at Chisholm Trail. The other places are just on another level, IMO.

RE: Lockhart, TX BBQ
1. Kreuz
2. Smitty's
-----------------
3. Black's
4. Chisholm Trail
And remember you don't need sauce for good BBQ, just like you don't need A-1 all over a good steak.

And while you're at it, drive an extra 15 minutes down US-183 to City Market in Luling. Can't go wrong there, either.

How come Memphis fans fixate on BBQ so much? I know in the past it was part of the sales pitch to get Memphis into the BE, along with FedEx dollars. We even had a thread or 2 about Memphis trying to use BBQ to get into a BCS conference.

City Market -- voted by a panel of international chefs one of the 101 best places in the world to eat. Ribs, links, brisket -- all good.

City Market is good. The problem is that you throw it up almost immediately after having to smell Luling for 30 minutes.

Hmmmm....not the sharpest tool in the shed are we?
People from the south love good BBQ. It has nothing to do with people from Memphis. It's a good thing this conference is getting some Southern influence. Time to bring some culture that doesn't involve couch burning up in this place.

Don't forget to take a run up to Taylor, Texas for Louis Mueller's. Better brisket there than in Lockhart.

Their original pit just got destroyed by fire.

BBQ is an art form. Whether eastern NC pork, Memphis style, or Texas brisket, it's all different, but all good.
