RE: OT: Game of Thrones
I'm fascinated by a lot of people's reactions to the finale. I don't think you're going to get many "perfect" episodes where everyone loves it, but I thought they did a great job. Honestly, I think it helps to have read the books and to know what is coming. You can see them beautifully setting up everything that goes down in Season 4. I would argue that Season 4 is going to be better than Season 3 in a lot of ways, which says a lot considering Season 3 was so damn good.
I never read Game of Thrones. I just picked up with Clash of Kings after watching the first season. I breezed through the books and loved every second. I also missed a lot. I went back and got Game of Thrones and made a concerted effort to read it as soon as the 3rd season concluded. I was somewhat hesitant ... I know in hindsight that I missed a lot of detail by not reading the book but was afraid that, since I know what happens, it would be harder to read it. Well, boy was I wrong. I started last night since there was no Nats game to entertain me and I got through the first 4 chapters in about 45 minutes. I'm up to page 50 ... and had a really hard time putting it down.
So far what I had heard has been confirmed. The first season of GOT sticks very, very, closely to the book. Clash of Kings and season 2 are also pretty close, with a few deviations. The show has really started to take liberties with the show now, though, as the books become even more complex and the show, logistically and understandably, has to consolidate characters, eliminate other characters, and tweak story lines to make it fit better on TV. I think the show has done an incredible justice to the books, and 99% of the time the major story is being held together (major events, characters, etc), where the end game of the story arc is the same, it just takes a couple of different ways to get there. One example for those that haven't read the books ... is that Stannis had another bastard of Robert, called Edrick, in his possession the entire time. Gendry, in the books, stays with the Brotherhood without Banners. In the show, they eliminate Edrick and have Mel travel to get Gendry. Logistically it kind of makes sense of the show in that it eliminates a paid actor in a minor role and replaces a character you don't really relate to or sympathize with in the book (Edrick) and replaced him with a character we had grown affectionate of (Gendry). If you dig too deep, though, you start to uncover some holes ... like how was Melisandre able to travel the equivalent of 1,500-2,000 miles in one episode by boat and horse to get from Storms End to the Riverlands? Anyway, those are just some minor glitches ... on the whole, wow. What a production on paper and on screen.
Season 4 is going to be epic.
